- 4'' Metal Blast Gates
Overview
Heavy-duty construction is longer lasting and less likely to jam than plastic blast gates. Designed to fit inside the 4" clear flexible hose. For more simple, convenient, and stable operation, use our blast gate wall bracket (sold separately). It attaches to both the wall and gate, eliminating the sloppy hose movement that occurs when opening an unanchored blast gate.

Has anyone tried these with 4" 30 ga galvanized HVAC duct? Will they connect?
Tysom
on Dec 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Solving the same problem now. They fit inside the non-crimped end of the 4" HVAC duct, but there are no screw holes, so I'm in a bit of a pickle since I wanted to use them on vertical sections of duct. Should be fine for horizontal runs.

Mine are all horizontal and I ended up sealing them with heavy HVAC tape I got at Home Depot. The type that is made of aluminum. My buddy used inner tubes for bicycles from Walmart to create a bushing or seal around the end and then clamped it and it's working well for both of us.

Yes, I purchased 8 of these for cabinet making shop, they work great. I installed mine the knob is on the opposite side from the vacuum, so when you close them and tighten down the knob it completely seals, no leaks. GREAT PRODUCT, also Mine were 50% of and were on back order for 12 weeks, The wait was well worth it. Mark

I can't tell from the pictures: Are there mounting holes that allow mounting these flat on panel instead of a flange? I've got an Incra Router Table Combo (the works!) on the way and I'm running my dust collection for the fence through the dust collection cavity which will contain the router. 4" connection to my DC system, 2-1/2" hose from this cavity to the 2nd collection point on my fence. When router head is away from the fence, I'd like to be able to shut down the fence DC.
Alternatively, what type of metal is it? Easily weldable (So I can mount a couple of strips for mounting flat)?

4'' Metal Blast Gates

2-1/2'' Metal Blast Gate
BEST ANSWER: There are flanges on both sides of the gates and are designed to be mounted in-line to hard or flex tubing.
They are made of aluminum except for the part that slides which is steel. There are no screw holes but they can be drilled for hard tubing and clamps can be used with flex tubing.

HI Steve, No there are no holes to mount the blast gate to anything. I have an Incra Pouter table also. What I have is a 4" holes with a 2 1/2" adaptor that reduces it so I can put a vacuum hose that goes to my router table dust pick up.

What's the ID and OD of these?
DaveR
on Sep 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: ID doesn't" matter in this case, there would be no way to keep it attached to the gate. OD, again doesn't matter, it will only fit a 4" hose. I found the flanges tobe some what narrow, so a spring type clamp seems to work best rather than the screw type. I also prefer these gates above the plastic ones because they can be used in any position & do not seem to get clogged as much. Hope this helps.

These blast gates work great! Much better than the plastic ones. The plastic ones we had before always broke under the weight of the pipe and the frequent use. The metal ones are much sturdier and I think they'll last us a long time.

Metal blast gates outperform plastic
I tried to save a little money by opting for plastic blast gates while developing a good dust collection system. Plastic works marginally, but I ended up having to stick shims between the gates and the walls just to keep the gates from sliding shut. I also had problems with dust accumulating In the grooves where the gate slides making it impossible to close the gates. This required disconnecting and frequent cleaning. Metal gates solve both problems with a screw lock and a self-cleaning slot at the bottom. I expect them to last far longer too.

Great Value
I was finally completing the dust collection system in my shop and didn't feel like spending $20 apiece for blast gates, so I thought I would make some using Masonite and Melamine. After blowing several hours of shop time I set them aside and checked Rocklers sale page and found these for 6 or 7 bucks apiece. They are well made and work well. The only fault is the flange[s] are a little short making connecting a hose or PVC awkward.

The metal gates are much better than the plastic ones. The plastic ones get dust in the closed end where some people want to put a seal and will not close completely causing a really large vacuum loss. I started my dust collection system with pastic blast gates due to the price. I have since replaced all the pastic blast gates with metal ones and have not regretted it one bit. The small loss of vacuum can be overlooked if you have a big enough supply on the business end of the system.

My use was to replace a plastic blast gate on a commercial air dryer at dog grooming operation. The plastic wore out broke and the metal gate was easy to adapt. It should last for many doggy groomings. Thanks

Didn't purchase the Metal Blast Gate for a dust collector system , I purchased it for a Motorhome to shut of the hot air duck that they put in at the factory to heat the water pipes under neat with no way to shut it off which is a 4" system does a beautiful job.Rockler is a awesome company to deal with excellent service.

They are quality blast gates but have a small flaw, they sing a little bit when all the gates are closed and the vacuum is on. Other than that they are perfect for my needs.

Blast gate review
I like these metal types over most of the plastic ones I have used in the past, as they clear sawdust more easily when closing, opening. The plastic ones typically will clog the chute parts over time and are impossible to clean out enough to close all the way.
The only negative I have is that the clamping flanges aren't quite wide enough to attach a hose and provide a good grip, especially when the hose has to be moved from one machine to another. Other than that, I really like these - they perform well.

Works good. The screw stop/lock is a little awkward.

Works great on the floorsweep.

Blast Gates
Much better than the Rockler plastic gates. The Rockler plastic gates collect sawdust in the bottom of the gate slot which does not allow the gate to fully close. There is no way to clean out the Rockler plastic gates.

Sturdy and seem to be good quality. Fits nicely into 4" sch 35 PVC. Drilled two holes and used screws to secure. Connected other end to equipment with Rockler clear 10' hose with clamp. Was a little hard to get hose over the end. Would be nice if the ends were a little longer to make clamping easier (why 4 stars instead of 5.

Solid 4" Blast Gate
I like the solid build of the gate. My only nics are 1. It does not have a mounting flange, you have to buy that extra and 2. the flange where you attach the hose is pretty short. It was hard to get the clamp to fit that close.

Works great but frustrteation installation.
Once everything is installed it works great, but I found it very difficult to get the hoses onto the coller and then to get the clamps on as indicated by the directions.

They're pretty good
The good: These are well made and sturdy, with nice castings. They can be disassembled. I like the lock knobs, which should be installed on the upstream side to a provide proper seal. These are way stronger, and look better than plastic gates.
The bad: Although nicely cast, the design of the castings have three design issues.
As others have pointed out, the flanges would work much better if they were longer. Short flanges are no fun if you are having a wrestling match with a pesky piece of flex tubing. My clamps sit at the outer edge of the flanges, rather than securely up the flange a bit. Once assembled, these have not given me any problems.
Second, at the back edge of the gate slot, the casting is slotted all the way through. Huh? I covered mine with a strip of aluminum ducting tape (the metal stuff, not the fabric stuff) to eliminate a massive vacuum leak.
Third, the slot in the casting that the gate operates through has a large amount of slop. The slot is about three times the thickness of the sheet-metal gate that passes through it. This is a way bigger gap than the plastic ones I have, and again creates a substantial vacuum leak when in operation. To solve this issue, I opened up the casting and installed a strip of adhesive backed velcro, loop side only, across the trailing edge of the the gate, just inside the bump in the sheetmetal, and on the side toward the locking knob. Now when I pull the gate open the velcro fills the gap in the casting, and eliminates the vacuum leak. When operating the gate, I have to pull a little harder, but it's not a big deal, and it tells me I'm getting a good seal.
I'm quite happy with how the gates perform - after tuning them a bit - so I give them 4 stars.

Metal Blast gates
These are superior to the plastic ones which I am replacing as they clog after a short while and you must take them apart to clean them. The only deficiency with the metal gates is their nipple is rather short and it is difficult to connect the flexible hoses to them.
