The barrel trimmer and cleaner pair I got at another place is poorly made. I am hoping that this barrel cleaner is machined better.

This is replaceable unlike the kit with multiple barrel cleaners. Works great.

Well... Not what I thought, BUT...
Well... Not what I thought, BUT that was my fault. Everyone can always use a backup 7mm trimmer. I'm sure I will get alot of use out of it... I meant to get a combo kit...lol... Again, my fault.Everything I have gotten from Rockler has been worth the money paid.

I recently (Mar. 27, 2009) retired...
I recently (Mar. 27, 2009) retired and built myself a hobby shop. I equipped the shop with a new table saw, planer, drill press, new router table, compound miter-saw, cabinet makers work bench, dust collector, and a small wood lathe. A metal lathe and small mill will be my next additions. One of my first non-repair lathe projects was a starter set of five slim-line pens. The combo mill is another great tool to get me going in creating some fine looking pens. I was not sure how to use it, so I first tried chucking it into my drill press but that seemed too aggressive on a scrape piece of ¾ stock so I turned a quick handle for it out of some 1 dowel stock and tried it by hand and it worked perfect. There was not the aggressive cutting of the drill press mode plus I had absolute control over how much or how little I took off. The integrated barrel cleaning shaft kept the cutter perfectly aligned so that I got a perfect right angle cut every time. I would highly recommend this combo mill for anyone considering taking up pen making as a hobby or as a semi profession.

Using the 1/2 inch barrel cleaner...
Using the 1/2 inch barrel cleaner works better than the 5/8 on pen projects. You find that the ends when cleaning do not over lap the edges which usually causes breaks in edges. Best tool to purchase.

I expected a shank and not a screw to fit into the drill chuck. I'm not sure why they used a screw.

The "J-Size x 1/2' Pen/Pencil Combo...
The "J-Size x 1/2' Pen/Pencil Combo Mill" as stated in other review is weak where the threads meet the top of the mill, if you get this one make sure and also buy a replacement barrel cleaner, you will need it.

Purchased the Pen Mill Barrel Cleaner/Trimmer...
Purchased the Pen Mill Barrel Cleaner/Trimmer Combo. Was satisfied at firt, then it sheared off at the joint between the threaded stem & the thicker portion of the barrel cleaner. The combo is sold with a poor design threaded barrel cleaner whereas the "ala carte" version has the keyed surface and thicker stem. Only turned 15 pens before the combo version broke. Worth the extra $2-3 to buy "ala carte". Lessens the chance of shearing off and you get a positive locking surface when locking the set screws. I save a couple dollars to spend another $12.
