I made this for a friend during my overseas tour in Italy. She had all these military collector coins on her desk that were always falling off.
The base is rectangle approx 18 x 12". The two tiers are about 6" and 8" half circle. I used dinner plates as templates for the half circles, and just measured the base. On top, I used gold cabinet knobs as "bollards" to create a nautical look. I stacked the tiers and base together, pre-drilled holes, and used the knob screws to hold the parts together. The edging is a synthetic ultra white 1/4" twine. I frapped the ends w/ smaller twine and used a glue gun to affix. I painted the edges of the wood the 3 colors of the Italian flag, and stained the rest. I used a Dremel to rout the slats to hold the coins, and route out the person's name. I used small hand and coping saws to cut the main pieces of wood. I then drilled two holes in the top tier to hold the Italian and US mini-flags. Then to give the project a feminine touch as it was for a lady, I bought two ceramic hand painted flower lapel pins, and took the pins off to secure the flowers with the glue gun. Most of the time was taken awaiting stain coats/paint coats to dry.
