It was time to add a mantel to the bare brickwork of my fireplace. The top is two layers of ply, the top one birch and I used two types of molding. In order to cut the miter in the wide piece of molding I constructed a jig from regular ply to keep it at a perfect 45 degree angle. I Cut the molding by hand with a fine tooth handsaw resulting in a nice fit. After Sanding i rubbed two layers regular dark stain and finished it of with 7 layers of oil with 2 days interval and this gave it the deep dark finish.

Time to Build: 1-5 Hours    Difficulty: Easy

"I only get to visit the Pittsburgh store once a year so I make sure to make my visit count. The staff there is always helpful and very patient as I zip from aisle to aisle like a child in a toy store."
