I built this out of birch ply, no edge banding. The 7th graders use this box to turn in assignments. It gets bumped around and easily could get scratched and dented, so I just routed a profile on the edges of the plywood top and bottom, filled a couple of voids, and put the thing together. It was finished with 5 coats of satin poly. It was so popular I had to build to others for other classrooms, and now my wife wants another one to use at her own desk in her classroom.

This design is a triumph of function over style, and that's okay. Stylish is fine until it gets trashed by a 12-year-old.

Time to Build: 1-5 Hours    Difficulty: Easy

"I just purchased the shelf pin jig. It works great and is so simple. One of the best tools for the money that I have."
