My granddaughter wanted a daybed. I took matching headboards, upholstered them and had my sweet husband make new side rails. We used Surface-Mounted Keyhole Bed Rail Brackets #32077. There is a trundle underneath for sleep overs. It was an inexpensive project with a custom look. If you don't have headboards take a look at a magazine called My Home My Style May/June 2010 for more detailed instructions.
