I made this box out of wood taken from an early 1900's bookshelf that had been destroyed by the previous owner's dogs. After storing all of the pieces for fifteen years and telling myself that I would find a way to repair the piece I decided that it was just not possible to do it justice.

I decided to repurpose the wood.

So far I have made two boxes from this beautiful. One for each of my daughters. This recipe box has carved paper roses on it and an inscription on the back. It holds 3x5 recipe cards and has cards that match the pattern in the wood and included a few "secret family recipes" too.

I don't have a very well-equipped shop so the pieces were hand cut on a table saw and the edges shaped with a router. The feet were shaped on my belt sander. Gluing it together turned out to be one of the biggest challenges. Without the right tools it's hard to get everything cut square and aligned.

Time to Build: 21-50 Hours    Difficulty: Moderate

Locate Your Nearest Rockler Store
"I live in NJ, and wish there was a physical store near where I live. My experience with rockler.com is second to none. Not only are your products first rate, but customer service/product support is exceptional. I've called several times, and never received someone on the other end of the phone who was anything but extremely helpful, patient, and friendly. The biggest compliment I can give is that I TRUST Rockler for all my woodworking needs. The only other store I can say that about is LL Bean. My wood working friends in western NJ love Rockler. Keep on keepin' on - and get a store here in Jersey!!"
