A toddler and a 10 year old boy each have an access to their playroom through their bedroom ceilings. A friend of mine knew that I do some log work and asked me to build treehouse style stairs and ladders for the access. The older boy just got a straight up ladder with a fireman's pole, the younger boy got stairs with hand rail and a short ladder at the top. I used the log tennon cutter A LOT and found that the smaller diameter logs were easier to cut tennons on. The logs that were too big for the tennon cutter required some sanding with the belt sander kind of like sharpening a pencil so that I could fit the cutter over the end. Lots of fun, lots of work, lots of stress.

When all was said and done, it was well forth the four months that it took me to build! The family loves it but most importantly, the kids love it and it's very surdy and safe. It is anchored to the studs in the walls with large lag screws.

I actually built a mock up wall in my shop based on the measurements of the home and pre built the entire thing. I then disassembled it into about 12 somewhat manageable pieces and used the paint booth to spray on several coats of polyurethane. Spraying it on worked much better than brushing to get the product deep into any splits or irregularities in the logs.

I used the help of 3 friends and 3 of my brothers to carry the parts inside and install them. It was a fun build and I would be glad to share more hints and tips with anyone interested in taking on similar projects. email:jaredwbeck@yahoo.com
