My wife needed a good table/cabinet surface for her sewing room. I was able to get a three piece cabinet with really good drawer hardware at a second use store in South Seattle. Then I decided that making an all hardwood table top using various quilt patterns would be a great theme and project. The table/cabinet top is 2'x10' and I started by laying down a single piece of particle board after aligning the three pieces of cabinetry. I then made templates for each pattern based on quilting books my wife had. Each piece needed to be individually cut and precisely sanded and fitted, which is why this project lasted over a period of 3 months. The real longevity was because my shop is two floors down from the upstairs sewing room and I made several trips up and down two sets of stairs with each piece to get the sanding exactly right. I'm sure I clocked over 20 miles in doing the entire project. It has kept me in very good condition and I'm 63 years old. The project was very much like putting a puzzle together. I purchased nearly all the exotic hardwoods from the Tukwila Rockler store. They had a very good variety and I was able to get much of it on sale or just a good price from the wood bin outside. I individually glued each piece in place. When finished with the woodwork, I put three coats of Minwax Clear Gloss Varithane sanding with 320 grit paper in between coatson the surface. My tools included my 10" chop/mitre saw, table saw and disc sander. Only nipped off the end of one left-hand index finger during the entire project. Pretty good for me.

Time to Build: 51-100 Hours    Difficulty: Very Difficult
