Question for Rockler and people who use this adjustable featherboard on Dewalt table saw DW745. The warning on the package says for saw to position the featherboard at least 2 inches before the blade to prevent binding and kickback. I understand the need for it to be positioned before the blade but is it really necessary at least 2 inches before the blade? At least 2 inches is probably feasible for larger table saws but on my compact jobsite Dewalt DW745, with the blade raised for cutting ¾ in plywood, the best I can do is 1 inch between the blade and the first feather. There isn’t enough space to position the featherboard at least 2 inches. I watched this video on Youtube of someone using this adjustable weatherboard. The featherboard isn’t located at least 2 inches in this video. It’s just barely before the blade. I am new to table saws and I am taking every word of safety caution seriously. Please help. I really don’t want to return it to Rockler.

BEST ANSWER: I have been using this same table saw with the Rockler featherboards for about 2 yrs now. Becasue of the tablesaw size issue you mention, I place the featherboard so the front is just barely NOT touching the blade. Depending on the blade height and table size, many times I am only able to secure the front lock. No issues thus far.

How do you get the featherboard to stay in place in the miter slots? I have tightened down the knobs and the featherboard just slides down the miter slot. I didn't receive any instructions so I have the bolts facing upward going through the center hole of the metal miter pieces, and into the threads of the knobs. Did I assemble it incorrectly? How does the featherboard "lock" into the miter slot? The table saw I am using is the Dewalt DWE7480 and has standard size miter slots.

BEST ANSWER: The featherboard rails that fit into the miter slots on your saw or router table are 3/4 inch wide, which is the standard size of miter channels on most table saws and router tables. It sounds as if you have the featherboard assembled correctly. The bolts have countersunk heads that fit into the bottom of the featherboard rail that fits down in the miter channel. Those rails have channels that are about 3 3/4 inches long. When you tighten the knobs on the featherboard, those countersunk heads are designed to spread the featherboard rail so it squeezes against the sides of the miter channel and holds the featherboard in place. It is possible that you simply may not have cranked the knobs tight enough for the featherboard to grip. If, however, your miter channel is a bit wider than 3/4 inch, you may have to place a metal shim in the channel so the knobs can secure the featherboard rail in place when you tighten the knobs. Also, if you have used paste wax or something similar to rust proof your table saw or to make your miter slide smoothly, you may have lost the friction that is needed to hold the featherboard in place. If so, you may have to remove that wax (or other lubricant) in order for your featherboard to grip properly.

Can this be flipped to feed in either direction? I would like one for a band saw, but the feed direction in the picture is for a router, table saw, etc.

on Apr 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This featherboard is not designed to be flipped, but I took a look at mine and see no reason that it can't be flipped for use on a band saw. The feathers are molded with open channels on the underside, but it doesn't appear that would affect the performance of the featherboard negatively if flipped over for use on a band saw. It can be clamped down when flipped over in the same way that it is clamped down as shown in the picture on Rockler's website.

I agree that it can be flipped. While it has open channels on one side it is flat on both sides. The flat washers that come with the unit and go under the knobs will easily bridge the channel so it should tighten down and work fine.

BEST ANSWER: Metal rods ride in miter slot on table surface. Featherboard sets on top and is held in place by screwing knobs into metal bars. Loosen knobs and, with piece of stock to be routed against fence on table table, snug featherboard up against stock to hold it against fence and tighten knobs to maintain featherboard pressure against stock. If using single featherboard, locate it on infeed side of router bit. If using on fence, bars should slide into slot on fence an featherboard should be adjusted to hold stock down against table.

The 2 aluminum bars are meant to drop into one of the 2 table slots that the protractor slide fits. The "fingers" on the guide should be set such that the wood deflects the fingers, holding it against the fence as the wood is cut. Keep the most forward finger even with the beginning cut.

Definitely worthwhile. Should have bought two. One for the table saw, one for the band saw. Used on the band saw. Just reverse the feet that drop into the miter slot.

Featherboard
Having an older Craftsman table saw, I didn't have a t-track miter slot. When I saw the Rockler featherboard, I knew my problems were over. This is a rugged piece of equipment and works even better than the catalog description ! I couldn't be happier with the design and functionality. Great job Rockler !!

miter slot featherboard
Lot of cheap imitations out there. This one may be a bit pricey but is solid. My first one is still in service after 10+ years having suffered much use

Rockler Adjustable Table Featherboard
First time using a featherboard. Fits perfectly on an old copy of a Delta contractors saw. Works like it should. A good addition. Would buy again.

Best featherboard for the money
With the way Rockler prices things, I'm surprised this was as economical as it was. This featherboard works on both my table saw and my band saw.

Good value!
I don't know what makes those other feather boards so wonderful. This one does the job nicely for me, except when I set it up too close to the blade. I wish Rockler would offer just the feather board without the hardware; I've got several extra mitre slot widgets now.

Nice product for the price
Works like a charm. I especially like the metal inserts but go on the miter slots

Wish it had come with multiple channel sizes.
It's awesome. So way to use. Well made. Only works for a couple of my tools though as some of my channels (like on my old table saw) are slightly more narrow.

A great tool to have.
I have two and there are very few stock-guiding chores the two units will not handle.

Versatile and Effective
I have used the featherboard on both my router table and my table saw, and was very impressed with how easily it supported my needs in both situations. I wish I had purchased one a lot earlier in my project.

If you have a router table you've gotta have these!
Great for guiding the wood through and holding it against the blade. Increases safety as a bonus!

Featherboard Investment
Well constructed and with the adjustable feature adding to the utility and ease of using, a very good investment for woodworkers of all experience levels. It increases the safety factor by keeping fingers away from the blade and preventing kickback. I highly recommend this as one of the first purchases after buying a table saw.
