Another Sawdust Chronicles Challenge Completed!

Rockler is proud once again to have sponsored the recent Woodworking Challenge by one of our favorite podcasts, The Sawdust Chronicles. This second Challenge was done a bit differently than the first (see our previous blog post '30-Day Woodworking Challenge Inspired Beginner Woodworkers'). The Fall Challenge was longer (60 days instead of 30) and instead of being required to make a particular project, contestants were allowed to choose their own project, with the only stipluation being that they create something that "positively impacts [the] environment/community".

This was definitely a very different way of going about it, and the contestants rose to the challenge! There was a big variety of projects submitted - everything from wren houses to a DVD holder for a public library, from a Carpetball table for a youth center to cutting boards for the animal feeders at the zoo!

We really encourage you to visit The Sawdust Chronicles and to view the five-part video podcast about the contest. The judges (Rick Waters, Pete Bretzke, Erik Pearson of The Sawdust Chronicles, and guest judge, Neil Lamens of Furnitology) take their time and review the entries in depth, and it's interesting to watch and see if you agree with them.

This time around Rockler gave Bench Cookie™ Work Grippers to the first ten entrants to complete the Challenge, and a special prize to one winner: a $100 gift card. The winner of the Rockler prize was Shawn Sealer of Reinholds, Pennsylvania. Shawn (who has only been woodworking for a year and a half!) designed and built a Media Center for a class of special needs children. This gorgeous table is made of red oak, with walnut and ebony inlay. Kudos, Shawn! Excellent project for a good cause. Congratulations on your win!

Rockler applauds The Sawdust Chronicles for continuing to encourage beginning and amateur woodworkers to get out there and create! Great job, guys! It was lots of fun to follow along!

I can't tell you how much fun it was to see the wonderful projects come in, or how humbled I felt knowing that the contestants were doing so much for others out of the kindness of their hearts. Thank you Rockler for helping make this contest prossible!

Thanks to Rockler for their involvement with the Build Challenge and to The Sawdust Chronicles for putting it on. It was a lot of fun to participate in a contest that contributes to the greater good of the community.
