About Robert Sorby
With a heritage that dates back over 200 years, it’s no surprise Robert Sorby hand tools set the benchmark by which all other carving and woodturning tools are judged. At Rockler, we’re proud to offer a wide selection of Sorby tools, from spiraling sets and sanding tools to chisels, scrapers, gouges, and calipers. All of Sorby's cutting tools feature the legendary tool steel blades that have made them popular for two centuries, fine edges that will hold up long after lesser tools.
The Spindlemaster has become one of Sorby's most popular new skew chisels for wood turning incorporating both flat and oval faced cutting edges into a single tool. The oval face helps eliminate grain tearout caused by the sharp corners of a conventional skew chisel, while still providing the smooth slicing action of a skew chisel. The flat faced side is designed for truing straight sections of your piece and cutting end grain. Large sturdy hardwood handles fit comfortably in the hand and give excellent control over your cut. These chisels come in four sizes from micro to 1" and are well suited for shaping everything from delicate ornamental pieces to bed posts.
When it comes time to apply that high polish to your turning, Sorby’s Sandmaster is an ideal tool for all your round projects. The design incorporates a free spinning sanding pad on an adjustable pivoting head akin to a long armed random orbital sander. The rotating action of the head nearly eliminates sanding marks common with static hand held methods and effectively extends the life of your cutting surface by continually un-loading the abrasive. The sponge pad also ensures that there are no hard spots to scratch your work. The tool is equipped with Sorby's large sturdy hardwood handle that fits comfortably in the hands and gives excellent control over your work, the pivoting head allows access to even the most contorted surfaces. Hook and loop sanding disks are available from 60 to 400 grit, and for a 2" or 3" pad. For that particularly fine polish a buffing pad mandrel is also available.
If you're looking to get started in turning, need a perfect gift for your favorite woodworker, or just want to expand your tooling range then a Robert Sorby turning tool set can be an excellent value. Sets incorporating several tools for specific tasks such as bowl carving, spiraling, or delicate small scale work are available, and at a significant savings over individual purchases. An excellent example is Sorby's Micro Hollowing set, a modular system designed specifically for hollowing small delicate projects. The set comes with three replaceable blades covering all the basics necessary, and of course they are all made using Sorby's legendary HSS tool steel blades.
The basic workhorses for cutting end grain in turning projects are scrapers, and Sorby has a stable full of ‘em. Whether you looking for a fine little 1/2" round nose, an all purpose square end, or the massive heft of a bulk material removing extra heavy duty scraper Sorby has it. All their scrapers feature the legendary Tool Steel blades and large comfortable hardwood handles giving you excellent control and chatter free years of use.
When a project calls for a match between multiple turned pieces or work closely drawn from a patten or model, you'll need a good set of measuring calipers. Sorby makes the best. These high quality instruments are a pleasure to use and will offer years of reliably accurate service. They are available in a range of sizes and configurations to cover virtually any task you will encounter.
