I am building a butcher block top out of maple and walnut - I was told to treat it with mineral oil with beeswax. Where can I find a large container of this product, and am I doing this correctly?
Steven M
on Jul 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This is mineral oil and beeswax and there is plenty in the container for multiple butcher blocks. If you need more you could always purchase more than one, or you could make your own out of beeswax and mineral oil. As far as whether you are doing it correctly, you didn't tell us how you are doing it, so I guess the answer is no.

Butcher Block Conditioner

Butcher Block Oil
BEST ANSWER: I have just recently used the conditioner and have not used the oil so I cannot make a comparison. The conditioner was applied and wiped off two times. It left a brilliant finish but slightly slick. I have not used the cutting boards yet so I cant tell how the finish works but it looks beautiful and rich.

I also used Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner. The conditioner has wax in it, which accounts for the slightly slick surface. It works best if used in a very warm state.

How much should I purchase for a final finish after 2 (possibly 3) coats of BLO on a 6'4' Hickory "butcher block" island top (strips-not end-grain)? I have made an island-top of raw select grade hickory. I put 2 coats of BLO so far. I am wanting to keep the finish natural wax like this one. How much should I buy for this amount of wood? Will 1 bottle cover it with some left over for maintance?
Scott B
on Jan 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: One would.probably take care of it but I would buy a couple for future maintenance. I made some end grain cutting boards this fall and did not put a finish on them. They have dried out and cracked due to the dry winter heat. Use plenty of mineral oil to help seal it.

Since you already have 3 coats of BLO, I think 1 bottle should be fine. Float it over the whole top and let it sit and soak. You can just wrote it up or buff it and you'll be good. 6'4"? Depending get on the width, you should have some left over.

is this what i want to use to retreat a used cutting board?
Debby T
on Nov 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes - I treat my end grain cutting boards several times each year with this. I've also used it to treat friends very old cutting boards which look like dried up pieces of wood and it instantly revitalizes them. Best if you can sand the wood down , working your way to something like 220 grit. For a more polished surface continue up to 320 grit or even 440 using orbital sander. Lightly dampen surface afterwards, let dry , then one more time with fine grit....this really leaves a smooth surface. Then treat it with butcher block conditioner. I warm my conditioner up in pan of hot water, till it is melted, and apply to board and let it soak in....then buff out.

The short answer is "yes".
Depending on the condition of the cutting surface of the used board, you may want to renew the cutting surface with sandpaper to remove any stained areas before applying the finish. I recommend allowing the cutting board to sit for a few hours before using it.

How long does it take to fully dry?
Joe M

BEST ANSWER: I put three coats on and allowed a day or two between coats. I have recently seen that applying a coat of pure food grade mineral oil first can be helpful. I saw on you tube that the the last coat should be mixed with melted parafin wax (50-50) and applied for a better finish but have not tried that yet.

Works great!
It provided a good, protective finish to my newly constructed under-counter pull-out cutting board. Just remember to warm it first and give it ample time after applying to soak in before buffing it. I did the recommended 4 coats for wood with a new surface.

Must have for end grain boards
I make a lot of end grain cutting boards each year for friends and family and this product really protects them. I first soak my boards with mineral oil and then apply this conditioner after gently warming it up in a hot water bath. I let it sit and cool then rub and buff out. Our personal cutting board gets daily use and still looks good after three years. You must reapply this product periodically to maintain the boards. I have also used this on older long grain boards that were dried out and this product restored their appearance. I also used it on wooden kitchen utensils that look like they have dried out. Strongly recommend this product.

Conditioner worked better than I expected
I used the conditioner on several end grain butcher block cutting boards. I used straight mineral oil first (2 times), then I used the conditioner. It worked like a charm. The boards came out feeling silky smooth with no residue that you get when you use straight mineral oil.

Conditioner for red oak cutting board
Heated product until it was completely clear and hot to the touch. The plastic bottle bulged but did not break. Applied it liberally to red oak cutting board surface. Two coats, separated by one hour, prepared the cutting board surface for (hopefully) years of service. Very happy with this product.

Works Great
This product is thicker than others I've used in the past and works like a charm. I'm buying this stuff from now on!

Hard to mess up I guess.
Used this on a spoon I carved from purple heart. Really brought out the color while staying food safe.

Shopped around for product to use...
Shopped around for product to use on cutting boards. Have a bamboo board and decided to try it out. It worked fantastic. Soaked in very well and left a great looking board. Plan on using it on several other projects. Recommend this product to anyone who works with wood.

I use this on both my cutting boards and my maple-top work table, and it works great for each. It soaks in really well, is odorless, and holds up well. I've found that I can go 4-6 weeks between conditionings on the work table. I've found it works much better than mineral oil alone.

I'm very happy with this product....
I'm very happy with this product. I make several cutting boards a year for gifts, and this is the best finish I've found so far. I've used GF's Salad Bowl Finish, and although I like their product for certain projects, I've found that it leaves to hard of a finish on top of cutting boards (which then magnifies knife marks!) The mineral oil from the Butcher Block Conditioner penetrates the wood and the beeswax seals the pores. The softer finish of the beeswax shows less knife marks and gives the boards a very natural look and feel.

Good product, easy to use.
I've tried several other cutting board oils. I was looking for a good penetrating oil, but also had some shine after it dried.A little buffing and I had some nice cutting boards.

Good stuff
I ordered this for a cutting block that I was making as a gift. It really works great for new work. A couple of caveats, however. The directions say best if used warm. I have to strongly second that because the oil and the wax that's in it tends to separate. I put it in a pan of water on the range warmer and the cutting block in the bun warmer so that both pieces are very warm to the touch. It will buff out and take a nice shine.

Very good food grade product.I can not find anywhere so I am glad to have. I do wish it was straight mineral oil for the application would be much better and easier to apply.
