Some things are just faster/easier with a template vs doing it freehand. I'm thinking this is one of those things.

How thick can you make the Butterfly keys with the templates?
Todd P
on Apr 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: With a few passes you could probably get up to an inch. The limit is how deep you can safely cut with your router bit. You could probably make even thicker ones with a multi-step process (e.g. make the initial cut then drill a series of holes and carefully use a jigsaw to rough out the thicker piece, and finally finish the thicker piece).

The farthest I've gone with it is about 1/4". I really haven't wanted anything deeper.
By the time you g through the template and go 1/4" more you're extended 1/2".

I have safely made them up to 1/4". guess it depends on the router and material

will the template fit a uk router?
gregalls
on Jun 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: These templates are to guide the router to create the shape. The router bit and accompanying washer are the key to making the butterfly fit. I used a 1/4 diameter bit and homemade washer for my setup. You need a guide bushing that fits your router and a spacer washer to fit the bushing and match your bit size.

Good accessory
I use these every day, and I love them. The transparent plastic and reference lines are very handy.

This template system made the inlays a breeze. It was my first attempt at bow tie inlays and I had it mastered in an hour.

No Issues
I am writing this review as a first time template user/ long time wood worker. I used a Bosch 2.25 HP Combination Plunge Router and the Bosch Template Guide Adapter, RA -1126. I was inlaying Bowties in the surface of a large maple slab to be used as a dining table. The templates worked perfect. No adjustments of the inlay were necessary and the process was flawless. I places the template with the markings on the "top" side so as not to remove them with the tape as was suggested. I am currently purchasing another set due to misplacing the main size that I prefer for this application.

Buy the double sided tape with...
Buy the double sided tape with the product, the stuff they sell at the hardware stores is no where near as good.Take and score the centering lines as soon as you get the inlay set the inked lines tend to be lifted off by the double sided tape after the first use.Otherwise good product.

Modifications before use
Be forewarned. I had to sand all the edges of the templates to make them fit into the Rockler Inlay System. I had to make the same adjustments to all the original templates that came with the Inlay System. Apparently this is manufacturing that is adjustable at the user level but could be a real frustration if you were ready to use the system/template and had to spend significant time fixing first.

These templates are 1/32" thinner than the bushing on a typical inlay template kit. I have both a Whiteside and a CMT. Both have a 1/4" bushing. So the inlay bushing hits the workpiece before the base of the router rides the template. I had to shim the template in order to use it.
