Plate joinery, often called biscuit joinery because of the biscuit-shaped plates that are integral to the system, is a strong, versatile joining system that requires only two things: a biscuit joiner and some special football-shaped biscuits. Whether used for joining face frames, cabinet carcase components or lining up edge joints in panel glue-ups, biscuit joints are easy to cut and very difficult to break. The biscuit itself, a hard, compressed, and highly-dried wafer, is designed to expand upon contact with the glue inside the joint, creating a reliable face-grain to face-grain bond that is completely invisible from the outside. The first plate joinery system was the Lamello plate joiner, and the simple, intuitive design has remained much the same over the years.
