- Carter Hollow Roller™ Vessel Turning System
Overview
Hollowing out a vessel or bowl just got a lot safer and easier with the Carter Hollow Roller™ Vessel Turning System! The patent pending system uses a captive bar tool allowing you to focus on your work, and safely turn hollow forms and bowls using your own gouges and scrapers. The fully sealed bearing lubrication eliminates drag on the bar, giving you more control and a smoother flowing motion as you manipulate your turning tools. Constructed of heavy-gauge materials to dampen vibration, giving you a comfortable turning experience. Made in USA. In order to utilize the Carter Hollow Roller Turning System with your lathe, a mounting stud is required (See "More Info" for details).

what is the weight of the complete set?

BEST ANSWER: I looked on Carter Products website for the weight, but didn't find it easily. It's heavy, and if your thinking about shipping costs, I'd try to get free shipping. It's not outrageous, though. If you're thinking about the weight during use: the roller bar assembly is the heaviest part, and it's probably 8-10 lbs, but once it's on the lathe, your work is done. The tool handle, bar, cutter and laser attachment weigh a few pounds and are long and a bit awkward to put on the rig at first, but during actual turning use, the whole thing is supported and you won't be bearing any weight at all. It is solid and heavy-ish and absorbs vibration well. I like the system and use it. It doesn't do the turning for you - there is still a learning curve - and that's as it should be.

If you were to sit it all of the parts on a scale, the total weight would probably come in at about 12 to 15 pounds. When you put it on the lathe, the weight is distributed and you never have to lift more than about 3 pounds. Once you attach the cutter bar to the rollers, there is no weight at all; it becomes self supporting.

Hey to all! Will this work on a Nova Comet II?

BEST ANSWER: I am not sure. But when I ordered, there are different stands for the tool rest. You can request the correct pieces to work with different lathes.

Say I want to do a hollow form with a very small opening which opens up to a large inside diameter. What is the smallest opening I can get the cutter/bar into? does carter offer tools for the system for this purpose?

BEST ANSWER: There is not enough room to open up the inside of your vessel as the cutter bar is straight (curving is limited to the diameter of your opening) I did have a 13/4" opening and was able to carve out a diameter that allowed an insert for a bottle vase. The smaller opening i had to separate the vessel and then hollow it out. This is a great system. (sorry I don't have pictures gave the vessels away as gifts)

you can get in to a hole just bigger tan the blade, BUT, you have to angle it to make he cut. You would have figure out the angle then measure the size opening it would need. They make a holler with a curve to do what your trying to do.

Good results
Fairly easy to set-up and use. Be sure to read the instructions to adjust it for your lathe. I was hollowing a funeral urn and had to hollow to a depth of about 7 1/2 inches. I was happy with the results

This thing works exactly as advertised!...
This thing works exactly as advertised! If you set it up properly, it will take the average turner to a level you probably only wished you could achieve in just a few minutes. It makes hollow turning and internal undercutting safe and carefree. I have not chased a catch launched turned vessel across the floor yet and used to do it at least once per vessel before I got this. Believe the hype, this tool will free you to successfully turn vessels you would not have dared before you got the Carter Hollow Roller system.

Greatly speeds the process
I have not had this system for long or turned many vessels with it, but it greatly speeds the hollowing process and even first turning green bowls. It builds confidence to the point of having to worry about inattention. It does prevent the "peek and lift" problem, where the turner peeks into the vessel and lifts the tool handle into a catch. Sharpening the small cutter is difficult. Rockler would do us a favor by carrying the sharpening jig, although a jig can be easily made by drilling a slightly undersized hole in a small hardwood block and jam fitting a split dowel. I also have the laser guide and that speeds the process even more as it eliminates the constant stop and check business. I think i will love it until I improperly set it and blow out a side. The whole assembly is heavy and awkward looking but fully supported in the jig. It takes a bit more force to move and adds inertia, but practice compensates for it quickly. I gave four stars only because the front support locking system is not highly engineered (a plate and a bolt) and has to be messed with to get it into alignment. I'm thinking of attaching a centering block on the bottom plate with a pass-through hole for the bolt (you're welcome, Carter).
