Project Description: Having read all the books and looked on the woodworking message boards, I couldn't be stopped from building a custom kitchen. And here it is. Turns out, it is a huge project for a basement wood shop. One of the biggest challenges is having a kitchen's worth of cabinets in your basement. To make it more manageable, I did the project in two phases. A tip from this project is dewaxed shellac in a one pound cut is a fantastic way to stop blotching and enhance wood grain in cherry and maple. I use it on everything now, unless I'm using an oil finish. If you are thinking about tackling a kitchen, and nobody can talk you out of it, don't try to duplicate standard cabinets. Throw in a few details and measurements that let people know right away that it is custom. You don't see many 44 inch wall cabinets in standard kitchens. The open display space at the top of the wall cabinets and the crown molding are two details that are big hits with friends and neighbors.
