Some tips

Jason Posted December 19, 2013
I used the "Inferno" blank, but thought that this may be helpful:
I found that the 2 main keys to successful turning of these blanks are 1) after rounding, increase speed (I used 2430 RPM) and 2) use sharp tools. Slower speeds and dull tools produce chips. Other tips: use a live center (like Rockler's 43472). My lathe had a "dead" center, which I started to use, then quickly realized that it was melting the acrylester...duh. I switched to a live center which worked great. Don't be aggressive. Be gentle. Trying to cut too fast will result in chipping. When sanding, try not to create too much heat. I found that if I wasn't constantly moving the sandpaper around, it created too much heat and caused tiny cracks in the surface of the acrylester. I used a DAMP Scotchbrite-type abrasive pad (equivalent to #00 steel wool) for the last step before polishing, which worked really well. I made a pizza cutter handle (for Rockler's 34913) and thanks to a tip I found somewhere, I placed the insert on the allen wrench and heated it up with a propane torch. Not SUPER hot, but hot, then quickly screwed it in (I drilled a 1/2" hole). This worked beautifully. Otherwise, I fear that it would have cracked the handle. The end result was a beautiful, smooth, shiny handle. I didn't have to fill anything with CA glue like some of the other reviews I've read about acrylester. Good luck!
