BEST ANSWER: I use a 13 gal, 1 HP portable dust collector and a 55 gal plastic drum that I got from the local car wash, had to cut the plastic top off and replace it with a plywood top and put sealant around it to seal it properly. I have used this for about a year now with no problems except the wait time for the sealant to set. Also had to cut a sight window in the drum to check the fullness of the drum. I used the 4 inch connectors, works great on my planer, I also have the small tool hose kit to use with my sanders.

I am using a 32G heavy duty model by Rubbermaid. It holds it shape perfectly against a 1HP Grizzley with a 4' hose between the fan and the can there is 6' from the can to the planer. I would feel confident to use a 1.5 maybe 2 hp model. Additional hose will reduce suction power if need be.

It would but if your suction device is too strong then your "barrel" can collapse. Of course, you could put some braces but then it starts to become a lot of work.

Does the debris container need to be as air tight as possible in order for the suction to be effective?
Courtney W
on Sep 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The debris container needs to be as air tight as possible. If not, it will cause the dust collection system to be less efficient. The dust control device only moves a certain amount of air/minute and any leak in the container results in some of that air movement being dissipated via the leak.

BEST ANSWER: If you refer to the free plans directions are included. Draw your pattern for the hose usong your own supplied fitting. If you use the lid with the large can idea then trace the line for the output in the same manner. Many combinations of hose are possible so the hole size is determined by you. Hope this helps. Will this work with a standard 5hp shop vac with 2/1/4 hose till i get a real dust collector?
Chris
on Jun 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi Chris, I don't see any reason for it not to work, however it was made to be used with 4 inch hoses, so you might have a hard time finding the right adaptors, from your 2 1/4 hose, to 4 inch, specially since those adaptors are funny, in terms measurements are sometimes internal, sometimes external, a perfect adaptor for a hose, does not always work with another conector, of course you can always fix it with duct tape, now my advice would be, buy a Oneida dust deputy for your shop vac, it works great, and you will want to keep it in your vac even after you get your dust collector, it's kind of expensive, but saves you tons in vac filters, and work, and use this product once you buy your dust collector.

don't see why not... You would need a reducer from your 2 1/4 to a 4" I am running a system with a shop vac "6.5 hp max" I have it connected to a 55 gal plastic drum with a gate for 4' and 2.5" running 4" about 30 ' to a dewalt planner and 2.5" about 40' and it works very well don't even have the lines tape just piece (yet) together. I am very glad I bought it I would recommend it HIGHLY

You will need to describe what you have on either side of the barrel, and what material the barrel is made of? You have more suction than air flow. What happens when you disconnect the hose on the inflow side of the barrel?

Shouldn't collapse if you followed installation directions. 4" line in from your equipment, 4" line out to your dust collector. Even with gates closed it shouldn't collapse your drum

I am using a 55 gallon barrel and it is collapsing. What am I doing wrong?
Brian B
on Jan 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: this is designed to use a 30 gal cardboard barrel and mine works as advertised. If your barrel is collapsing that would suggest that you have a constriction on the inlet side. If you have a powerful dust collector and it is pulling more air out of the barrel than is coming in, I can see a plastic barrel collapsing. That suggests your inlet is too small (or a kinked hose, or something to restrict the air) and the barrel is too weak.

It's hard to believe your dust collector can develop enough negative to collapse your drum. Make sure that the air can flow, but otherwise the drum must be much weaker than we think, so replace it. I would go to a smaller drum anyway, since this will fill up first before most of the material starts moving to your main collector, and you will have to empty if. 55 gallon will be pretty heavy.

Can this be converted to 6" inlet and outlet?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, with an adapter, but I don't think it would be very effective. It would be easier to build a can with 6" fittings.

How deep is the threaded flange? Will it go through 3/4 inch plywood with enough threads?
Paul A
on Nov 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The short answer is "YES". I used a 55 gallon metal drum. I made a top from 3/4" plywood and mounted these into it. It works fine and collects most of the sawdust. My theory was that the 55 gallon drum is much taller than the cardboard drums, therefore farther for the sawdust to fall and not get sucked up by the outlet. Just make the cover a bit larger than the diameter of the drum. Rout a 3/8" to 1/2" dado for the drum to fit into to make a good seal.

What effect does this have on CFM ? If the Dust Collect side produces 500 CFM how much vacuum loss is expected on the separator input side to the tool ?
Spike E
on May 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Zero or very small loss. In the long run it probably helps because you end up with less stuff in the bag so there is more bag area open to allow air flow. I only have a 1/2 HP system and it works great.

Works extremely well
I bought this set to make a separator for my 20 inch planner. I cut a plywood top for a 55 gal drum. I get a lot more work done before it’s time to empty. Comes with instructions and it’s very simple to put together.

Debris catch
This works awesome behind the planer. Used on cardboard drum barrel, easy to set up, easy to empty. Set drum on castor platform and easy to move with vacuum.

Dust separater
Well worth it. Works great. Compared to what an actual cyclone separater costs and how well it works you can’t really go wrong. Much easier than changing the bags on the dust collector.

Works like a charm!
I built a separator out of a Rubbermaid plastic trash can. I added a clear window so i can monitor it and a DIY valve to prevent it from collapsing if the hose gets blocked. Chips end up in the trash can and only fine dust in the collector.

This is the second set I've bought, one set up for each lathe, each attached to a heavy duty (large) garbage can on wheels. A little weather stripping on the lid to ensure a strong seal and they work flawlessly.

Dust Control
It has taken me a while to finally attain an adequate dust controll separation system. This one is perfect. The only barrel I had available was a 30 gallon paper drum from U-line. Just a little interior support and perfecto! If you have a powerful 2 1/2" shop vac you can hook it up with a 4" final that will pull up to 600 cfm. I found this out by accident. My shop vac collapsed the barrel, whereas the 4" system didn't.

I used the Rockler plans to build the dust separator because it doubles as a tool stand or workbench for small things.
Works great.

Fantastic!
I am using these components with a 32G Rubbermaid Heavy Duty garbage can to create a cyclone separator. It seals very tight as is. You can increase the seal by using some plumbers putty too --I did that since the lid is flexible. Dramatic difference in using this system then the PVC do-it-yourself systems I've seen on youtube. Comes with an awesome plan for a dust separator too.

Works great. I was lucky enough to get a cardboard drum (30 gal) from my local grocery store (sweeping compound container). I have a lot of rough sawn lumber and this will make clean up alot easier. Works great with my Delta planner.

In line filter
This is a great alternative to more expensive true cyclone separators. I bought a 55 gal trash can with wheels and lid included from Webstaurant and used a old stop sign as the mounting plate for these pieces, then attached four wood blocks to the underside of the aluminum to sit against the inside of the can for stability. The aluminum plate offered more stability then the lid that came with the can. This saves my dust collector from pulling large chunks through the impeller. This is well worth the money. The pieces are threaded and heavy gauge. Very happy.

Basically it does what it is supposed to do. Plastic is heavyweight and high grade. The pieces screw together for a tight fit and there is plenty of length to attach the hoses.

Works Great..
I made a top for a 55 gallon drum (out of plywood) and mounted the elbows in it. It works great ! It has much more capacity than the 30 gallon metal trashcan I was using before. I cut the plywood top 2" bigger than the 55 gallon drum and used a router to put a groove in the top to fit over the rim. I lined the groove with stick-on foam for a door seal. That forms a perfect seal between the top and the drum rim when the dust collector is turned on.
