Mix up your own fresh
shellac in the exact amount and cut you want!

|
Fresh shellac dries faster, permitting the proper application of many thin
coats in a short time. It also ensures that you’ll get the rich, handsome
finish you want for chairs, cabinets, musical instruments, and other fine
projects. Because shellac is non-toxic, it’s an ideal choice for cradles and
cribs! Each 2 oz. Rockler Shellac Kit contains 2 oz. of shellac ''flakes’’ and a
16 oz. container with markings for accurate measurement. To create your
shellac, just add the amount of denatured alcohol required for the lb. cut
you prefer (denatured alcohol available at most hardware stores or paint
supplies). For example 2 oz of shellac to 4 oz. of alcohol will give you a 4
lb. cut, and 2 oz. of shellac to 8 oz. of alcohol will give you a 2 lb. cut
(Depending on the temperature and denatured alcohol you use, allow up to
24 hours for the shellac to dissolve.) Also available in 8 oz. bulk sizes
without mixing container. Kits are available in your choice of three
shades: Orange, for a traditional ''amber'' finish; Blonde, for a near-clear
finish; and Garnet, for a more ''antique'' look.

I purchased the kit because I wanted the measuring jar to make life easier when mixing the shellac. When I got the kit the label was applied crooked and now I have no idea how much alcohol to put into the jar.
Now I just wish I would have ordered the bulk amount of flakes and used one of my peanut butter jars to mix it.
Editor's note: Our customer service at 800-279-4441 will be able to get a replacement jar to you Jim.

I used the shellac in an art project, sealing a beeswax surface, then painting on it with alkyd paints. This kit allowed me to try the different colors available with just the amount needed.

I ordered the 8 ounce package and it came in 4 separate 2 ounce pouches. This eliminated the need to measure different amounts for smaller shellac batches or different size cuts. It also helps to ensure the freshness of the shellac flakes that you do not use. Seems to be a good product.

I'm a hobbyist furniture maker, and I use the shellac kits quite often. They simplify the process since I don't have to weigh the shellac in order to make a batch. 8 oz is about the amount I need at one time, so I have less waste also.

I've been using the garnet flakes for a current project, and so far I have no complaints. However, a couple of things need to be noted...
First, the garnet color is not a pure deep orange; it has quite a bit of an amber tint to it.
Second, use a high quality denatured alcohol. I'm using the Klean-Strip brand that's sold just about everywhere, and it takes about three days for the flakes to fully dissolve for a 2 pound cut. The container says that the flakes will dissolve in about 24 hours, but for me that hasn't been the case thus far. I certainly see it as a quality problem with the Klean-Strip stuff, but have noted it here anyways.
Another thing I like about this product is the convenience of the 2 oz. packets, and the container itself makes for a good mixing jar.

I ordered Garnet shellac, but after 12 coats the color was still not reddish or dark, but rather about the same as Amber shellac.
