I decided to try this as a change from edge-banding and was happy with the results. I bought the maple. A couple of the pieces were not quite straight but at 7/8" wide, there was enough room for error that they still worked on the 3/4" ply. Generally I found that one face was smooth and on the other you could see blade marks. Just make sure you put the correct side facing out.
