I am building a cypress rocking horse for my great grandson. The plans recommended a sanding sealer so I tried it. I bought the General Finishes product because of past experience with their Polyacrylic.
I am amazed by the ease of sanding and the build-up of finish. I'm sold. I'll use it on future projects.

Sprayed nicely and sanded easily. Very clear when finished. What else could you want.

Amazing - After applying a water-based stain, wait until it dries, then apply a thick coat of this. All of the little fibers of grain become crystalized. Use some fine garnet sanding papter, and sand down the drain. After applying the water based poly, your have a factory-looking finish with little work. No fuzz left.

I was led to believe, not by Rockler nor by any documentation of this product, that sanding sealer was an indispensable product. It is not. Not every water-base finish requires water base sanding sealer; a dilute coating of the finish works just fine (it might be harder to sand but adds a coat of finish right on the wood, with no coat of zinc stearate [a soap] to reduce adhesion)(if it's not zinc stearate then it is likely some other soap). Other than that, I believe that 'dewhiskering' after use of the sanding sealer was easier than just using a damp sponge; certainly the sanding went better but then there were brush marks to deal with (or ignore at my ?peril?). Probably I ask too many questions to be doing this sort of activity.
I suspect that the best use of sanding sealer is to improve the uniformity of stain application on woods like pine.
