A natural, sustainable hybrid of Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla, Lyptus thrives in the warm climate of Brazil, permitting harvest in approximately 15 years as opposed to 50 to 70 years in colder regions. These colorful woods make dramatic accents, edgings and inlays.

NOTE:The lumber on this page is offered in random widths from 3'' to 6'' and is priced in units of square feet (SF). To order, check the box next to one or more desired thicknesses of lumber and click "Add to Cart". This will take you to Rockler's Lumber Configurator where you will be able to specify the quantity and dimensions of the lumber in your order.

A natural hybrid of Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla, Lyptus thrives in the warm climate of Brazil, permitting harvest in approximately 15 years as opposed to 50 to 70 years in colder regions.
  • Grown on highly productive plantations, interspersed with reintroduced indigenous trees to preserve native ecosystems.
  • Wood characteristics include excellent workability, machining properties, density, finish tolerance and overall strength.
  • Wood is kiln-dried, planed and dressed on both faces for consistency and dimensional stability.
  • Uniform moisture content of 6 to 8 percent.
  • Available in three thicknesses: 25/32", 1-1/8" and 1-3/4".
Lyptus compares favorably to hardwood maple in terms of density, strength and technical properties, and has an appearance similar to that of cherry and mahogany. The superior quality and remarkable beauty of Lyptus make it the ideal hardwood for furniture, cabinets and architectural millwork.

Lyptus premium hardwood is a fully sustainable and renewable resource. Grown in the warm climate of Brazil, carefully nurtured Eucalyptus trees produce long lengths of clear wood that is carefully harvested and processed.

From my experience, Lyptus works like Cherry. Easy to sand, clean cutting, about the same weight. Lighter than many other exotics. I notice that the sawdust feels waxy or oily similar to teak. Kind of a cross between Mahogany, Teak and Cherry actually. Enjoyable to work with. Will definitely order again.

Lyptus is a a fairly hard, dense wood. IMO it is not quite as dense as maple, but that is a good thing - cutting and routing is far easier/smoother than maple, and cleaner than softer woods. Despite its density, it glues up nicely too. But the really pleasant surprise is how it finishes. With just a little extra sanding time, it absorbs finishes nicely and fairly uniformly. I’ve found that tung oil alone (or with just a few drops of stain if you really want to alter the natural color) brings out a beautiful amber/red/brown. The picture provided is just tung oil and top coated with a couple of coats of clear water-based polyurethane. Not quite as tight-grained as mahogany, and the grain patterns may not be pleasing to all, but well worth a try if you are a fan of the more red colored species.

I am building a reading stand with lyptus (a wood I have never used before), and it is great stuff !!! The color and grain are lovely, and it works like a dream: cuts clean, sands and routs easily, and seems to be easy on my tools. It is very heavy, which makes larger pieces awkward to handle. Also, on the up-side, lyptus seems to be exceptionally stable, showing little movement even though we have had significant weather changes recently.

I haven't started any finishing on this stand, so I don't know how lyptus will take finish. If anybody has any info on finishing lyptus, posting it here would be appreciated.

Editor's note: Lyptus can be finished with all types of staines and finishes. It is similar to hardwood maple in terms of density and technical properties, and has an appearance similar to that of cherry and mahogany.
