- Famowood Wood Filler-Wood Filler (6 oz)
Overview
Made from genuine wood flour, these fillers closely emulate the properties of real wood. They can be stained, sawed, drilled, sanded, planed and nailed, just like the real thing. They show no noticeable signs of shrinking or cracking, so you'll only have to apply it once for a smooth repair. It spreads smoothly and evenly, and sinks into gaps. No mixing is required, and it dries in only 15 minutes. Suitable for interior or exterior use. Available in 10 colors.
Instructions for use:
Instructions for use:
- Match wood filler color to unfinished wood. Always test filler, stain and finish combination on small area
- Press wood filler into defect
- When dry, sand flush with surrounding surfaces
- Sand and finish after approximately 15 minutes
- Use Famowood Solvent (#54684, sold separately) for cleanup
- Over time, the filler in the can may thicken. Use Famowood Solvent (#54684, sold separately) to restore wood filler to its original consistency

I have been searching for some time now for a wood filler that really works. I recently finished a King size cherry bed frame and I had a few minor blemishes that needed to be filled in. I was under a deadline and had to go with what was available at the big box stores (not completely satisfied). I was recently listening to a previous episode of wood talk and this product was recommended, after reading the reviews and seeing the price I decided why not give it a try.

Will M
on Feb 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: In my use of this and others it does not stain like the surrounding wood. It appears lighter. I have not found one that matches the wood I am filling. The closest I have come is using the saw dust of the piece I am working on with a little glue to fill with and this doesn't work that well either

BEST ANSWER: Get the right kind of wood. I've always had trouble getting the results I am happy with by staining. You can't make pine look like walnut. This is a great product. Get the closest color. I keep 3 different colors on hand. If it starts to dry out, add a little acetone. Dan

I am refinishing bedroom furniture manufactured by Hickory Furniture Company. The furniture was produced using Paldao Veneers. What is the best color to use to fill some dents?
Carol B

Thank you, Daniel. The Paldao Veneer is unusual and has light and dark tones. I have talked to Rockler and will make the trip to their new store in Novi, MI with a door to determine the correct color. My husband has suggested I change the existing hardware. I will change the size of six pulls which means filling in 12 holes. Fortunately the 16 knob holes remain the same. I just want to get it right since I am spending so much time on this project and the furniture is well worth the effort. Any other suggestions. I appreciate your help. Carol
You're lucky you're close to them. You might get lucky on your pulls and may only be filling one of the holes, possibly none as they may match up. Good luck. Dan

Also if the filler doesn't stay in the "dent"take a putty knife or maybe a nail and make the dent a little deeper and then fill it with a putty or wood filler that is the same color as your wood.

BEST ANSWER: It may not weather well. It generally works best when used with a top coat of some kind to seal the wood from the atmosphere. Being that it will be used on exterior (I'm assuning) decking it will be subject to harsh weather and may not last very long. Colored urethane caulk could also be used as an alternative.

I'm going to have to rebuild the corner by hand, if this doesn't dry too fast. I don't see the color I need, can it be stained? David, thanks so much for taking the time to reply.
It can be stained but I think it will show. What is the wood you are using?
It's pecan & oak. Hard to find anything that really takes stain well, though the company says it will. Thanks!
The problem is that you are using a filler than is not the same as the base wood, so trying to get that match so that all the wood looks the same would be somewhat challenging. I would suggest you might ask if there is a blend of say to of of these fillers that would create a pecan color. Ok I have one thought, I looked up for pecan filler and found this company who sells it. I am not trying to take business away from rockler but something to think about ..Klingspor's woodworking has a pecan filler.

I am building a console table using oak. My oak is 14 inches wide and 2 inches thick but I need it to be 1.5 inches thick. The only way to do this is to cut the piece in half then rip each piece to give me the 1.5inches thick pieces. Then I will have to join the two pieces again to give me the 14 inch wide table top. Will this wood filler work to cover the seam that will be downy he middle? Every time I use wood filler, it is very visible after I stain. Since i'm using an expensive wood, I don't want to mess it up.
Thanks!
Thanks!

A lot of them only go to 13" wide, but I would try a local hardwood store, usually they have the equipment there and will do it for you for a few bucks. If you have to do it your way, I would suggest applying wood glue in the seam and sanding the area so the sawdust get into the seam and let that dry and sand the area again to remove any glue residue. Famowood is the best filler out there by far, but no wood filler matches the exact wood your using. The same species wood comes in a variety of different shades, thats why its best to use the sawdust from the workpiece your using.

In order to get very very tight seams you need to run the edge of the wood through a planer. That will ensure very tight seams. Also to reduce thickness you might find out if anyone you know has a flat planer that can actually plane wood up to 18 inches wide. This will reduce your seams by many. Just some suggestions. When you glue it also clamp it hard to close the seams up.

Can Famowood be used to fill large voids in vertical surfaces? I have a historic house that has termite damage to the 8” baseboards on a corner. About 3/4 of an inch on both sides of the corner need to be rebuilt. Planning to finish with an oil stain and poly. Is Famowood the best choice! Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: I have used Famowood for smaller repairs. For structural repairs of areas that large, I recommend that you buy the 2-part epoxy (which Rockler sells in soft plastic tubes) that will take stain, and then add a drop or two of concentrated wood dye (also sold by Rockler) to the epoxy mixture when you squeeze it out of the tubes to mix it. I have used this epoxy to repair deep gouges and cracks in a wood floor that I re-stained with dark walnut and then varnished. An epoxy repair of this type, with tinted epoxy, will not "accept" any significant additional stain, so you will need to test the tinting to get the desired color.

I have a gouge in my oak table top. Will Famowood hold in small narrow channel? It is about half the circumference of a dime. Also, the stain in my table is honey oak. I have an old poplar wooden bowl with a 4" section of insect damage that was really "fluffing up" . I stabilized with a wood petrifier and would like to fill in the almost quarter inch depression. I will have to blend to match color as best possible, what can you use to tint this filler? Also one good thing the bottom of the bowl is very blacken almost as if burnished? Can this stuff be blacked as such with a torch, rubbed with charcoal

If out in the field or contoured section of neck it will work well but sand area to get good bond and fill. I've used this item years ago and works as well now as it did then. It fills well and sands smooth plus it excerpts stain reasonably close to wood color.

Works well
You have to work quickly since the solvent is acetone and it evaporates quickly. However, once it is in place, it does dry quickly allowing you to work it within a hour or so. It took stain really well. Could not see it after staining.

Fills voids in wood well; work fast
Consistency of varnish. have all tools for applying ready and work area to area on surface as directions state. Work time is limited. don't put on thick, better to thin a few coats than to have large thick areas to sand down. Makes a very smooth surface to paint. I used acrylic paint which shows defects easy, but finish was nice with this product.

Various shots of finishing in progress. Do not have specific picture of product application.

The Best wood filer ever
This wood filler is extremely expensive for a very small amount. But it's worth it. Extremely easy to work with. It can be sanded within 30 minutes. The can says 15 minutes. It's better to wait 30 minutes. The various colors blend extremely well with the wood you are filing. Great product. I keep all of the colors on hand. Very easy to revitalize, if it gets hard.

The best filler there is, but don't forget the acetone.
I really like this filler. It takes an oil finish in a very similar way as wood.
You really need a solvent to thin it though. They sell a Famowood solvent they say "for cleanup", but in some cases it really needs to be thinned out before use. I found that acetone is cheaper and works fine. Actually, the Famowood solvent smells suspiciously like acetone.

I keep at least walnut, cherry, maple, read oak and pine in my shop always. I recommend keeping their solvent on hand as wood fillers can harden when not used for a long time. Store the cans cover side down for longevity.

As Good As Ever
I bought this because I intend to always have some Famowood filler in the house, because I know it to be reliable, sandable, long-lasting in the can, and just all-around good. Be aware that the "mahogany" is very dark when finished clear -- that might be exactly what you want, or it might not. Also, my can was labeled upside down, so that the lid is on the bottom. That's perfectly fine and probably contributes to keeping the filler fresher, since it leads to storing it upside down, but I see from the picture that it may not have been deliberate.

Can't beat Famowood
stainable, sandable, dries hard. Doesn't want to shrink much, but needs a second application for filling quarter sized knots. I always keep some extra Famowood solvent on hand, since no matter how tight the cover seems to be, the contents want to dry out. I think once it gets rock hard it's beyond salvage.

I cannot say enough good about the Famowood wood filler. I am a serious hobbyist, not a pro but I want things to turn out right. I am in the process of building a piece of oak furniture. With all of the trim, and molding cuts I had a couple of joint that had small gaps. In the past if I used a wood filler you could always tell it when you stained it. I used this product and you simply can not see it which made the project turn out great and made me look good. I would recommend this to anyone needing a wood filler

Well, I was disappointed that I recieved the tiny 6 oz can rather than the pint size I buy locally for only about a buck and a half more. Admittedly, it did say 6 oz in the catalog, but I didn't even know they made a can that small. And erroniously assumed it was just a good deal on the "normal" can. (Lesson learned once again: READ THE AD, assume nothing. Aside from that, the usual great Rockler service, the backorder arived only one day later, and of course Famowood is great stuff, irregardless of size of the can, heheh.

There is no substitute when it comes to the best of the best. That what Famo is all about. You simply will not find a better wood filler. Its ability to basically become invisible is what sets it apart from everything on the market. Nail holes vanish, slight imperfections in a mitered joint seam together. The only down side, hard to come by. Not readily available at your local box store etc etc .

works great for small stuff
It works very consistent every time. It will not match the wood exactly when stained. It gets quite close but there's no way to duplicate woods texture with a filler. I AM NOT SAYING IT'S BAD.. It's the best filler I can find. But with anything you have to work with it a few times to know what it can and can't do. Also how to apply your finish to best blend the patched areas. A wonderful product....

I love this product the only thing about the cherry wood putty is that it could be a shade darker. Other than that it works great. Will by more Famowood in the future. Thanks.

I have been using Famowood Filler...
I have been using Famowood Filler for the last 12 years and have found no other product that does what it does any better. Minimum shrinking when dry and easily applied. Can mix colors to make a perfect match.

Applied and sanded well.
The maple wood filler is a little bit lighter than the actual maple threshold I made. I did have to buy some maple stain and stain all threshold, and it still came out a little lighter than the threshold. It applied and sanded well.
Next time I plan on using this wood filler, I will add some stain into it to help it blend better. I just wish I did that at first.
Thank you
Rich C

Famowood
Of all the fillers I have tried, this one was the best at holding at stain.

Any port in a storm.....
I have used a product called â??Plastic Woodâ?? for as long as I can remember. Because I could not find the correct color I tried this product. They both use acetone for a solvent. I found this product very dry and the container was only about two thirds full. Ultimately it did the job but it was not fun to work with.
