I just completed my router station project a couple of days ago. I've now built several projects from plans and found the New Yankee plans for the router station to be somewhat middle of the road for ease of use. I stuck with the plan for everything except for attaching the back. I used glue and screws here instead of the suggested biscuits. The project isn't really that difficult but it is time consuming. The end result is a great looking and very functional addition to my shop. I used all of the parts included in the parts kit except the 4" to 2 1/2" reducer. I had some other reducers on hand from another woodworking supplier that were better quality and less airflow restrictive. The rest of the items in the kit were great. I agree that mounting screws for some of the hardware should be included for the price. I went with 18" drawer slides, and in hindsight I should have done what Jay & Rich did and installed 22" slides and made my drawers to match to fully utilize the space within the cabinet. Overall I am extremely happy with the end product. It is solid and heavy, which should reduce vibrations and noise. Dust collection is phenominal at the fence and good within the cabinet. I have the router station attached via 4" hose to my 2 HP canister dust collector. I've mounted a Milwaukee 5625 3 1/2 HP router on a Rockler large plate for a dedicated set-up. I comtemplated purchasing a shaper w/ router bit adapter instead of the router table idea. I probably would have spent less, but then again I have the satisfaction of a self-made project and loads of storage. I estimate that I've got about $650, or slightly more, in this project all told. Woodworking dollars well spent!

I made mine first a few months ago with my wife Bonnie, and it worked so well that my friend Jay came over and we built one for him. I made mine out of melamine and like the clean look of it while Jays was made out of birch ply. We made minor modifications to the plan. The most obvious was to put the switch in the front where there was a blank on the right side above the drawers. The switch we got from Rockler can be modified to work this way by taking it apart and rerouting the wires out the back of the housing. We also put in t-track next to the miter slot extrusion in the table and in the stationary portion of the fence for feather boards. I also used the remainder of the t-track set in the underside of the top so the t-bolts would have a better purchase and not wear out the slot that secures the fence in place. We also added casters and breaks to the base and nice 22" accuride guides to the drawers. I extended the width of the center shelf by 1/4" and dadoed it into the back to help eliminate rack so everything stayed square. It is a great project but does require sharp tool and some patience. I also recommend that you not scrimp on your router lift. This will be a quality tool for your shop and the lift will make or break it for you.

Well, for starters, this was much more difficult than I had anticipated. I enjoy woodworking and try to do projects as often as time (and money) permits. I consider my skills to be moderate but this was the most difficult project I have taken on. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I learned a lot.
Some pointers...I have a lower end dado stack and I wish I would have invested in a better quality set. I found that the dado and rabbets didn't cut real well and there was a lot of tear out. Especially, when I tried to cut the slot for the miter track. I ruined my beautiful top because the laminate chipped out really bad. On my second top, I cut the slot first and then put on the laminate.
Overall, it was a lot of fun and I really like the design.

I consider myself to be an advanced beginner as a woodworker. This was the most difficult project I have ever undertaken. As such, I learned a great deal about cabinet-making. This project permits me to put “everything router” in one convenient place. It is well worth the effort required. I echo the remarks of the reviewer about dado tear-out. I too have a low-end dado set. I ended up using my router and a straight edge to cut the dados. Make sure you square the corners when you glue and screw the carcass together, or the drawer fronts you cut will not fit correctly. The kit does not include, nor does it specify the drawer slides to buy. On the advice of Rockler Technical Support, I used the Acuride model 3832 18” drawer slide, Rockler part number 32490. They work very well. I spent the money and bought a very good router lift and an extension to permit bit changes above the table. After all the time and effort it takes to build this, do not get cheap with the router set up. When you cut out the opening for the router plate in the table top, Make sure to use a template like Norm did and a router with a pattern cutting bit to finish the opening. A template was available for the lift/plate I bought. The extra money was very well spent. The plan specifies sizes for the holes in the router bit storage drawers. Make sure you buy these odd-sized drill bits for these holes. If you round-up to the nearest size of routinely available drill bit, you will be disappointed as the bits will flop around in the slightly larger hole. I searched for some time for the piece of “smoked” Plexiglas Norm used for the door. I finally gave up and went with a clear piece. The difference is insignificant. Don’t waste the time. Be sure you round the corners of the table top with a belt sander before you chamfer the edge. This is a great project that results in a real sense of achievement and a super tool for your shop.

I am definitely pleased with the quality of all the components included in the Rockler hardware kit. I have not installed all of the components into my table yet, but I was surprised that the 36” Miter Track which does need to be screwed to the table in a dado does not come with installation hardware ie. screws. I suppose that the kit is for custom made tables that could be different sizes but since it is tailored to the New Yankee Workshop Deluxe Router Station they should know that the table is 1.25" thick. Just expect to buy plenty more screws, knobs, and, and hinges.

I agree with others about this being a much more involved project than it looks. I took my time and the table came out just great. I too invested in a router lift and a 3.25 HP Porter Cable router motor. It works great! I also ran into problems with chipout on the miter slot dado. I found that if you score the laminate first it eliminates much of the problem.

This project was a challenge for me, but it turned out great. The way that I cut the miter slot in the top of the table was with my router, a 1" bit and the Rockler "All In One Clamp" with the router guide attachment. It worked great. No chip out of the laminate and it all fit perfect.
