For preliminary sharpening where chips exist or bevel angle need to be changed, use the 250/1000 waterstone. To remove smaller nicks and do a finish sharpening of woodworking chisels and other tools, the 800/4000 combination is the best choice. Finally, use the 1000/6000 waterstone for creating a polished edge.

Nagura Stone Forms a paste on finer grit Waterstones to speed and enhance polishing. Use with the 6000 grit stone.

Waterstone Holder For non-slip sharpening. The arms are made from chrome plated steel that resists rusting. Holder handles stones 7 to 9'' long.

I have an 800/4000 that I got in a Rockler starter kit with a 6000 that works wonderfully. I got the 250/1000 for taking out nicks, the stone works really well but is only 2" wide(unlike the kit 2 1/2") making it hard to hone plane blades easily.

I just tried the 1000/6000 wet stone on a set of Irwin Blue Chip chisels. They claim there not sharpened but feel sharp until you put these stones to them. I have less hair on my lower arm today then I had last week. The 6000 grit polish is the key, you can see yourself in the chisel.
