Can this bit set make 3/4" thick shaker cabinet doors with a 3/8" recessed panel in the front and an 1/8" reveal in the back? The panel material would be 1/4" mdf.
The reason I ask, is because the image of the router bits show the "tongue and groove" centered in the stock and I'm wondering if the cutters are big enough to cut the rail tenons in one pass if it's not centered. Hope that makes sense - Anyone know?

How are bits adjusted
Paul A
on Mar 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Paul,
Both bits contain a stack of shims that can be swapped in as needed. Take the nut & washer off, look up the required shims on the chart provided with the instructions and move them into the correct position relative to the bearing and cutters. The extra shims go back on the arbor and don't impact the desired cut. I've used my set with great success making panels for bookcases and radiator covers. I would highly recommend this T&G bit set.

Does this bit have to b used in a table mounted router or can i jus put it in my router and use it without table?
A shopper
on Apr 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The Freud instruction manual for this T&G bit set states: "Use a router table and fence whenever possible. Be sure all guards are in place. Bits over 1-1/2" in diameter must only be used with a router mounted in a router table." The cutter heads do exceed the 1-1/2" diameter guideline. As others have stated, safety and control come first.

It is better and much safer in a table mounted router, however, it is possible to use without a table if the material is secured in some manner so that you have complete control of the router Itself. Good luck.

Is this a set to make up one bit, or a two bit set?
Glen N
on Apr 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This is a two bit set, which is what I was looking for. I do mostly shaker style panel doors and furniture and this way I can have the bits set up and not have the hassle of breaking down the bit every time I want to cut slots or tongues. Works great for 1/4 inch plywood panels that are realty 7/32.

BEST ANSWER: Lance,
I use the porter cable model 8931 router which I believe is a 3 horse power and has a variable speed adjustment. The higher the horse power the more ability the router has to keep up its rpms when using these bits but its not just hsp that you need the spped control also helps you dial in the router for good clean cuts. I have two of these routers and they work great with this style bit. Hope this helps

The bit has a 1/2" shank. My guess is that a router that accepts 1/2" shank bits from a reputable company would be able to do the job. As alluded to in the previous answer, you might need to feed your work piece slowly if your router is less powerful.

Any router that will take a 1/2" shank shall have enough power to run this bit. I am comfortable using either my 1 3/4 horse or 2 horse router with mine.

Can this be used to make T&G cuts on composite decking material? Specifically Lowes ChoiceDek Foundations Composite Decking.
T-Rev
on Jun 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Good Day Trevor,
Most often than not you can use woodworking tools on composite decking. That being said the material tends to dull blades and drill bits fairly quickly. I would check with the deck manufacturer on there specifics but I would guess that it would dull your router bits quite fast especially if you were doing a whole deck (long lengths) Most of the composites are quite dense. If you are planning a small project with this material it would probably work out ok. Hope this helps you.

Because composite material is denser, stronger, and heavier than wood I think it should work might have to cut the tongue in steps maybe half at a time if its too hard. Good luck

I have 1/2" planks, I would like to and tongue and groove together; hence, would this bit work?

Just getting started with the new bits!
I work with 3/4 stock all of the time. I have it set to work perfectly with 3/4th inch stock. Once adjusted it worked great. The real test will come in a few days when I cut the slot on the curved side panels for the tambour of an old fashioned style roll top desk.

Works great even with Plywood
I made a toybox for my grandson and used these for the side panels using plywood in the center of the panels and Mahogany for the surrounding boards and it was very easy to put the tongue and groove in all of the boards and glue the panels up once I did a few test pieces to figure out the height settings for each.

Great set
Great set at a good price. Easy to adjust. However, it would be nice if the specs state the depth of cut.

Exactly what I needed
They worked great, easy to set up. I'd give them a 5 . I'm neither a carpenter or cabinet maker.

These bits did exactly what I wanted for the inset doors. Now a new project

replacing tongue and groove parts for an armoire more than 150 years old
The Freud tongue and groove cutters worked like a charm: smoothly and precisely; adjusting the router cutting size to measure with the use of spacers was a cinch. This was an excellent buy in terms of quality product, price and adjustable
sizes. I highly recommend this product having used it to restore a 150 year old Dutch Armoire from South Africa.

T and G bits
Good bit set. I like that it is adjustable and I can use it with boards that are greater than 3/4 inches thick. If you use thick stock then it is worth the purchase. I used the bit to T and G a floor that was 7/8" thick, it worked well and allowed me to decide how to set the cut.

Very clean cut
I've only tried these once so far using a shaper. The results were very good. Will be a bit tricky to get everything aligned but there is documentation online about build test fittings first which I will do once I use it for an actual project.

Great Gift Buying Experience
I can't give the product 5 stars since I have never seen it. I bought the bit set for my Goddaughter's new boyfriend who is very happy with it The buying experience was outstanding. The website is easy to navigate, well set up and the payment was smooth. The fact that I was shipping to a different address than my billing was no problem. I can only hope that the router bit set works as well as the website.

It is one of the most versatile tools in my shop. I been using it on 1 1/4" cherry with no problems with my Bosch plunge router. Cut is smooth with very little burn. So far very happy

Worked great.
I used these on cypress boards to create slats for wall panels in a camp. After running several hundred feet across these bits they still seemed just as sharp as the first board. I know cypress is fairly soft but I was still pretty impressed. They helped me get the job done quickly and it looked great afterwards.

Pretty easy to set up and works great. I would recommend putting a feather board on your fence though. If your wood has any worp to it, it won't seat flush.

I'm a Shaker-style kinda guy, so...
I'm a Shaker-style kinda guy, so I bought this Freud tongue & groove set to replace the spline technique I've used in the past. The first set received was damaged in shipment! but Rockler provided Excellent customer service by sending a replacement in very short order. My first use for this set was three cabinet doors in knotty pine. I found time saved, and much less hassle for set-up in using this new for me technique over the old spline set-up. A Porter Cable variable speed router mounted in a cabinet saw extension table was the rig used. Even at the lowest speed on the router, there were few problems making clean and accurate cuts. Getting such good cuts at the slowest router speeds might be because it seems the knives on these router bits are sharper than I've experienced with other bits. I've since used these bits on my favorite oak with the same high quality results. Overall, in my eyes this set is a winner! as is Rockler who has earned my continued loyalty for their really great customer service and product offerings.

I ordered the adjustable tongue & groove bit set because I wanted tighter fitting panels in my doors and woodworking projects. The set works as well as stated and I was able to get them without having to pay for shipping. I have and will continue purchasing tools and equipment from Rockler because of the outstanding customer service and short delivery time.

I bought this set to make some shaker cabinet doors, and it worked great for that, but now I find myself using it for a lot of other application. When I use it to edge join boards for table tops, the joint is always perfect. The cutters stay sharp, and cut clean.

With some things you get what you pay for and I found this true with this tongue and groove bit. Freud really makes top quality products. I used an off brand bit to build my bottom kitchen cabints and it felt like I was burning through the wood rather than cutting. When I started on my top cabinets, I researched tongue and groove bits and decided to give Freud a try. A quality bits does make the difference.

Freud Tongue and Groove router bit
Maybe it is just me, but I found that the set up guide for the various width of cuts, was not clear. There are several You Tube videos showing the bits in action, but none, that I could find, that gave detailed set up instructions for, say, a 1/4" tongue and groove. Numerous trial and error on scrap wood eventually got me to where I needed to be. The bits themselves work fantastic but the 4 star rating was due to lack of instruction on set up.

End Result was great!
The final T&G panels that I made came out great and once depth, height, etc were set the bit cut very consistently on a few different types of wood. I had no experience with this particular type of bits or bits where you can adjust the cuts using the spacers. I took me quite a few tries to use the chart that Freud provides, and the end I just resorted to measuring and trial & error. Probably a lot easier for people with more experience, but for beginners a little more explanation would have been good. Maybe even color code the spacers by height. All in all, good product.

Well...
Worked like a charm in quartersawn white oak. But the bearing guide was 1/16 too small and therefore left a 1/16 inch space when the tongue was inserted into the groove. I didn't think I would have to swap bearings to make it work properly...

great for multiple uses.
Used the adjustable bit for some new cabinet door & draw fronts. Took a little time to set up, but did a great job for the inserted panels. I like the adjustability for other projects that require a tongue grove. would buy again.

Performed as expected. However, If you should damage one of the cutters (been doing a lot of reclaimed wood lately), you can't buy replacement parts. The entire set must be replaced. I switched to different brand when replacing this set for the aforementioned reason.

Reasonable performace with some drawbacks
I used the set to make Shaker panel door and doors in cherry and found that for the slot cutter I had considerable tear out. At the smallest slot setting the groove is still larger than the 5.1 mm plywood, could be tighter. At times the groove depth was deeper than the mating pin, could be due to my alignment on the router table as it was somewhat variable but on the whole it was deeper. Otherwise the set worked OK.

I admit that I haven't used the bit yet! If I do use it, I expect it will perform admirably like the other reviews say. What popped my bubble was getting the router bit and seeing that Freud recommends a maximum router RPM of 16,000 for this bit...and I have a fixed speed 25,000 RPM router.
