- Freud® Up-Spiral Router Bits - 1/4" Shank
Overview
Upward spiral is perfect for ejecting chips from mortises. It’s also the ideal bit for pattern routing because the best face goes down while cutting, with templates attached to the top. 1/2" shank.
Application: Cutting mortises and routing deep blind holes
- Freud’s solid carbide up spiral bits combine effective chip removal with a cut that can’t be matched by standard straight bits. Ideal for production settings.
- Excellent for grooves and dadoes in all composite materials, plywoods, hardwoods and softwoods.
- Use on CNC and other automatic routers as well as hand-held and table-mounted portable routers.
Technical Details
- Brand: Freud
- Bit Type: Spiral
- Shank Size: 1/4"

Can I cut/follow patterns with this bit?
Adam F
on Mar 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This type of bit cannot be used as a guide bit on its own. It will require the use of a fence or guide bush against a fence or fixed pattern to be able to be used as a guide bit. A stand alone guide bit will have ether a ball bearing on the top, bottom or both of the cutting edges. Search on pattern cutters, trim bit or flush cutters for examples of a guide bit. Note that a guide bit can also be used to create round over’s and coves and many other edge shaping.

To follow a pattern you need a bit with a bearing. This is a free hand bit. It's VERY easy to cut where you do not want to. Bits have a habit of taking off by themselves. I use mint in a CNC router.

what is the recommended router speed for this bit ?
A shopper
on May 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The router speed is determined by the material you are machining. The manual on the Bosch colt, for example, suggests that for hardwoods, a setting of "4" be used. That is the setting I use in the Colt/Piranha unit I have. A tip along those line - never cut deeper than 1/2 the bit diameter in each pass.

I use it at my routers maximum. I do not recall if it is 20,000 or 25,000, but it works well. I use it in a small trim router.
