In the photo it shows how I half mortised the lock in. I used a small router with a small straight cutter, and cut from the front edge down. I clamped a piece of wood to the front so the router had a bigger base to ride on.Then using VERY sharp chisles cleaned up the mortise. There is a lot of cut and fit. I used an angle drill with spur bit to drill the key hole from the back and finished from the front to prevent tear out. The slot in the key hole is more difficult. I used an electric drill and smaller bit to get the slot. An escutcheon for the key hole would be a great addition. But the lock is reasonably priced and it works!

I make these custom presentation boxes for Civil War era percussion revolvers. The half mortise jewelry box locks work really well in this application. The are relatively easy to install and are functional.
