- Rockler Keyhole Slot Router Bits - 1/4" Shank
Overview
Use the keyhole slot cutter to rout a vertical or horizontal slot for hanging pictures and other wall hangings. The finished slot has a wide end that accepts a screw, while the narrower section captures the screw head. Simply plunge the bit through to create the larger diameter, then rout laterally to create the narrower slot. Keyhole slots are also sometimes used for knock-down furniture.
- Makes a 3/8" entry hole and blind slot for positive hanging on a headed fastener.
- Use the slot cutter to cut a vertical slot for hanging pictures with a centered slot.
- Rout two or more horizontal slots for larger hangings.
- For added convenience, use with our Picture Hanging Keyhole Template. We recommend using the 3/8" Hanging Slot Router Bit (92024) and 5/8" Short Shank Guide Bushing and Nut (38756) with the template (Sold Separately).

Cuts like butta! The two cutting surfaces make this an excellent bit for your application. However, I've had them snap where the shank meets the cutting head (but due to months of use, not through faulty use or construction). Wear PPE when using.

can a keyhole bit be used on a CNC router?
Donna w
on May 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Donna; If you are going to use the keyhole bit to make a slot for example to hang a picture and are only going 3/8 to 1/2 inch horizontal there is no reason why you can't use the bit in a CNC machine as long as you return to the point of entry before you extract the bit. also you probably know you cant go deeper than the cutting flutes on the shank. If you are going a greater distance horizontally you should have a vacuum to extract the chips. Hope this is helpful.

Short answer is yes, a keyhole bit can be used on a CNC router. Watch your feed rate and RPM to prevent burning.

Can you make a horizontal keyhole slot by plunging in on one end and then retracting at the opposite to make a hole there also?
John S
on Aug 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: yes, you can do this if your router bit has a sharpened edge on the top. You might get some tear-out when you retract the bit. To do the job you describe I might want to attach a fence to the router, make one hole, retract the bit and slide over and plunge the second cut and then slide sideways using your router fence. This way there will be no tear-out.

IDon't know what tool you are using with your key hole bit. I would day yes you can make a long slot. The difficulty would be retracting the tool at the end of the slot. A plunge based router would retract too fast and perhaps splinter the exit hole.

That is hard to say. It depends on the direction of force applied to the keyhole and the type of wood it is used in.

What type of router would be best used with this bit?
erin g
on Mar 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: a plunge router would be the best bet. Plunge down about 3/8 or 1/4 inch and then move the router along a fence. If you don't have a plunge router, drill a hole in your piece that matches the outer cutter, set your router bit to this depth and again use a fence to move the router to get a groove.

The little Bit that Can!
Wonderfully proportioned for my need. I used a large diameter straight bit to 'hog out' a picture opening from solid wood, and then followed up with this little gem to rout the slot that holds the picture.

I'd recommend this router bit. It worked exactly as I wanted. The bit is sharp on both edges. Then after I purchased the bit the sales associate at Rockler told me the bit can be replaced for any reason any time, as long as it can be identified as a Rockler product.

Works perfectly
It took a little thought to figure out how to use this on my router table, but with a couple of right angle pieces clamped to the fence and a bit of tape showing how far to move the work piece, it performed brilliantly. The 3/8" bit makes a keyhole slot perfect for a number 8 sheet metal screw.

Great tool for hanging projcets
I bought it for some small floating shelves. Just for lighter weight but they feel like they have a much stronger hold than those traditional picture/shelf hangers.
You need to get the appropriate bushing and template to do this repeatably and accurately. But with those it wasn't bad.
Great videos from Rockler on how to use the tool as well.

Key hole bit.
Since I bought my CNC Piranha I've been making welcome signs and plaques and the key hole bits put a nice professional
appearance on plaques and frames.
It's great for nail or screw slots for picture frames or plaques.

Keyhole Slot Router Bit
Being the first time I've ever used a keyhole slot router bit I was a bit nervous. Using scrap wood I made a trial cut and then made the slot on my wood project. It came out perfect. A nice clean smooth cut to hang my wood geared clock on the wall. Thanks Rockler.

I purchased the 3/8" diameter cutter. It cuts great. Please note: these cutters are not T-slot cutters even though they look similar. You can plunge with these cutters and cut the entire key hole, without any other tool. Please look at diagram carefully! and, when cutting, pay attention to what you're doing.

The 1/2" diameter Hanging Slot Bit...
The 1/2" diameter Hanging Slot Bit works really good as a T-Slot cutter for your custom fixtures. I used it to make an adjustable miter extender on my Incra V27 miter gauge and a fence adaptor for my router table.

i find that a lot of the saw dust and shavings stay in the routed out grove that the cutter makes, that is my only issue, as far as cutting a perfect keyhole slot it does that. i would recomend it to a friend, maybe i am trying to make the slot to quick i should try going at a slower pace with the router, thanks Rockler for another good jig !!

It does just what I wanted it to do. I have/had a HSS of the same size, it burnt way too easily.
got done what I wanted in alot less stress & burning!

Works great. One piece of advice, make a jig so you can get a straight line on your project.

Keyhole bit,
I am glad I bought two of them, I ruined the first one by going to the bottom of the hole and turning it on, not a good thing to do, Live and learn I guess, after I figured out how to use it, it worked great, no complaints at all.. Good tool, handy and easy to use. Does a great job, exactly what it was designed for.

I used the Key slot bit...
I used the Key slot bit for putting hanging slots on the back of a single piece of shelving that is about 12" wide on the wall and protrudes out 4". It was easy enough to use with a homemade jig for getting the dimensions of the slots exact, but the beauty of it is you don't really need to get them exact as long as they are close because the slots are very forgiving when you hang your project up. Glad I made the purchase.

Too light for slotting white oak
I used this bit with maximum care and it still snapped when cutting anything harder than poplar. Not recommended. Get the heavier bit.
