quest; what drill bit do you use to install the 10mm hinge # 28555. the tech data sheet says 27425 (I think) but no such # comes up in search ?. Please advise,
A shopper
on Aug 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The information sits in plain view on the web site. the 10 mm hinge uses a 10 mm metric bit. If the customer does not have metric drill bits, he (or she) needs a very complete set of English bits. The closest English measurement is the 25/64" bit, which is .39065" in diameter. The 10 mm bit is .3937" in diameter. The 25/65" bit is a bit too snug, but using the next size up -- the 13/32" bit, creates a hole that is.4065" in diameter, and the hinge will not stay in place even when the little screw is tightened fully. (Voice of experience here -- you need to buy a 10 mm bit.)
The tech sheet correctly shows the hole diameters and says specifically that sizes A-E on the diagram are in mm but the wood dimensions are in inches. The number 27425 probably refers to some old Rockler par numbering system. The current part number for the 10 mm bit is 22686. Buy the 10 mm bit for $4.

Can I use 14mm barrel hinges in 1-1/2" material?
Paul H
on Mar 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can Google “installation” of barrel hinges & get plenty of guidance.
Personally, the use of 1 ½” material suggests a heavier finished product than for the normal application of a 14mm barrel hinge, such as a typical smaller box. Plus, with a C/L-C/L installed distance of a little over 7/8” versus 1 ½” face-face distance of your material, the hinges would have to be installed closer to the edge than normal, i.e. not central to the thickness of the material. So, despite that it could be done with 14mm barrel hinges I wouldn’t use them as I think the dia. & depth of 14mm installed hinges is too light for structural integrity.
If you intend to use barrel hinges I would use the larger ones. These would probably provide the strength depending on the weight involved.

I would say yes since 14 mm is approximately 1/2 inch. So if you are using 11/2 material you have more than enough space for the hinge.

I am building a card box for my daughters wedding and I am using 3/4 inch Cherry. The bottom is just a square box but the top is half round top with slates going from one side to the other all the way from the front to the back. Could I use these hinges to open and close this card box?
Chuck B
on Feb 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Chuck, I used these hinges on a box I made for my son's wedding as well. They work well and are completely hidden. The 3/4 cherry is fine on the box. Plenty of room for 10mm holes. As long as you have the clearance in the top, you should be fine. I hope this helps. Good luck. Don

Don thanks yes the bottom slate is roughly 2 inches in height so that should give me the clearance. I cut each board at roughly 8 degrees and they are about 1 3/4 wide all the way up and over the arch so they arte pretty tight. I wanted it to be tight looking as you looked from the side. Thanks again

I don't think you want to use them. The curvature of the top will not work in your favor. Part of the uniqueness of these hinges is the fact that they are completely hidden.

Does anyone make a jig to use with these barrel hinges?
Michael
on Apr 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Don't know of one. Part of the trick is getting the exact drill bit. The jig -- to me -- is relatively less important since it would merely set the spacing between the holes. But if you want, create a jig on your own with brass or AL, and keep trying until you get the spacing exactly right measured by digital calipers.

Would like to use these on fairly heavy (approx. 22 lbs. each), 1" thickness inset bench lids. Would the 14mm hinges be adequate for this application at two per lid and for this thickness?
Lawrence A
on Mar 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Lawrence, To me, barrel hinges are better utilized on smaller projects such as jewelry boxes; even the 14mm size. On a bench lid, I would use a piano hinge and a lid support. It would.. still be relatively hidden in the back and less chance of the lid slamming down. Good luck.

Why are these metric but I can't find metric dowel centers to assure proper alignment of the two pieces?
Lynn B. K

BEST ANSWER: I gave up. A 10 mm bit was way too tight. I could have hammered in one barrel (assuming I didn't ruin it and had it perfectly 90-degrees to the back) but what would I do with the other? Hammer the wood workpiece to it? The next step up SAE was too loose. I'm just glad they weren't expensive...not counting the 10 mm bit that I otherwise didn't need.

BEST ANSWER: Rockler does make a 105 degree hinge that I put on a grand father clock and they work perfectly. The hardest part of installing them is getting the holes for the hinges perfectly centered and aligned but once you get that accomplished they are perfect!

Is there a way to seperate this hinge (with some modification of course)? I was thinking if it was possible to drill out the pin in the middle and add a custom removable pin. Will it then separate or are the connecting also attached in both barrels?

Impressive hinges
While these are harder than ordinary hinges or European cabinet hinges to install, they are easier then the soss full cutout hinges. They do all that they claim and are totally hidden. My tip: Defiantly purchase the Metric drill bit specified to cut the holes to recess the hinge body. Having the perfect size will save you a lot of goofing around.

Draw a line and cut your holes directly above one another
If you line them up right, they work great. I missed lining one up and had to pay some tuition, but I learned how to install them right the first time once I marked center line on both sides of my jewelry box top with a square. The accompanying drill bit makes for a great tight fit for these hinges.

Good Service
I certainly recommend these Barrel Hinges. They were used quite a lot in old hand-made furniture. It was very hard to find a supplier until someone suggested Rockler. When I need unique and historic items in the future, I will call Rockler---they are good to do business with.

I am sure this product is...
I am sure this product is great if one has the ability/skill to work with such precision that they can make holes to the millimmeter. I cannot, and so this didn't work for me. I wish there were a jig of sorts to help. All of this is simply to say: know your skill level....and unless you have a very steady hand, you may want a simpler hinge that is more forgiving, as virtually every other one would be.

I am very satisfied with these...
I am very satisfied with these hinges for use in small boxes. They are durable, attractive and a snap to install with perfect alignment. I use the 10mm size, and mill the box sides a shade over 1/2" thick.I have a few suggestions concerning installation. Firstly, it is a good idea to make a mockup, as shown in the photo in the top-left corner. You will see that, after drilling the holes for the hinges (but before installing the hinges), I've cut relief slots with a bandsaw (only in the mockup, of course). This allows me to remove the hinges by first twisting a slotted screwdriver in the corresponding slots. Without the slots, the hinges could not be removed without damaging the hinge or the box.To drill the holes, first mark the backs of the top and side, as shown in the photo in the top-right. The marked faces are placed against the bandsaw fence. Next, a) postion the bandsaw fence so that the first holes drilled in the side will be approximately centred relative to the thickness of the material; b) position the (say) left fence stop so that the hole at the far end of the side is in the correct position; and c) set the depth stop on drill press so the hinge will bottom-out in the hole when it is fully-seated. This is shown in the photo in the bottom-left corner. Neither the fence nor left fence stop are subsequently moved. After drilling the first hole in the side, pivot the board around the end nearest the hole, bring the bit down into the hole and position the right fence stop, as shown in the photo in the bottom right corner. Now the hole can be drilled at the other end of the back side, after placing the board against the right stop, with the mark on the board facing the fence. After repositioning the depth stop for the holes to be drilled in the lid, the two holes are drilled in the lid, one using each fence stop. By keeping the marked sides of the boards against the fence and the ends against the fence stops, the holes, base and lid will align perfectly.Lastly, when inserting the hinges, first make sure they are not put in (rotationally) backwards (i.e., ensure the lid will open after they are inserted). Then press them into the base and lid simultaneous and gradually, initially opening and closing the lid repeatedly, making small corrections to their rotational alignment, to make sure they are straight and not twisted. This is important, because you will not be able to straighten them in the holes after they are pressed in a very short distance (and you may not be able to remove them and start again). If the holes are drilled deeper than is necessary, care must be taken that one end of the hinge is not pressed in too far, as it cannot be pulled back. That is why it is best to test-drill the holes so that they are precisely as deep as is necessary for the hinges to bottom out when they reach the correct depth.

Good product, but installation is challenging
I used on some game boards designed by Woodsmith. I learned that you need a drill press with minimal spindle runout (less than 0.003") and Forstner bit. The twist bits sold by Rockler are worthless unless you have 0" runout! Getting the right placement is challenging. The tech. information is not real helpful. The maker, SOSS, is no better than Rockler.

Great hidden hinges, but be careful when installing.
I really like how these hinges work and that they are completely hidden, but be very careful installing them. They need a hole that is just smaller than they are, and you have to be prepared because they are hard to get out without destroying them. Also if you are using two types of wood (I was using oak and walnut), install the hinge into the harder of the two first. Then tap it into the soft. This way you won't push the hinge too far into the soft wood.

As other have stated, these hinges take some skill/correct tools/patience to install. The very first of these I installed, the hole was too small! I subsequently purchased a 10mm good quality bit and it have not had a problem. The barrels are very tight and only by carefully tapping can I get them in. The hinges work well, are concealed and overall I am very happy with them.

Working with barrel hinges requires some...
Working with barrel hinges requires some skill and experience. The instructions said to drill a hole the same size as the barrel hinge. In my case that was 14mm. So, I bought a special brad point bit and proceeded. Well, I attempted to insert the hinge and have to say it went in a little hard, in fact once I got it in, I could not get it back out. This was a test run fortunately. Have not removed the hinge yet for fear of damaging it. Considered drilling a 14.5 mm hole, but bits are not available in that size except by special order at $75 per bit. So, proceed with caution, and practice before working on your project.

Doesn't fit in a 10mm hole
I bought a 10mm forstner bit because people said not to try a 25/64" or 13/32". Well, i tried all of them and the hinges didn't fit (too tight, and once you'd force them in you'd never get them out again).
My solution was a 27/64" bit (brad point, don't have a forstner in that size) and use shavings as shims to get the fit.

I've used these hinges on small boxes (jewelry, humidors, etc) and they excel when the lid sits on top, but for a door they were very poor. Even small doors sag and they have absolutely no adjustments. Also, once installed, they are very difficult to remove to realign. I will try to be sure my designs don't use these hinges for door. But the work really well for small tops and lids.
