- Rockler Hinge Mortising Router Bit - 1/2" Dia x 3/4" H x 1/4" Shank
Overview
Use this mortising bit for insetting hinge leaves, stair treads, and for general purpose routing of large shallow recesses. The shorter length of the cutter makes it easy to pull the bit back far enough for very shallow mortises. 1/4" shank.

Clean cutting mortising bit.
It cut extremely clean hinge gains, just as I expected it to do.

Recently I modified the older version...
Recently I modified the older version of the Rockler Dovetail Jig with 1/2" template to make box joints. This involved clamping a spacer board underneath the template as both backer board and to prevent the router bit from chewing into the template and/or jig. The test piece is then clamped vertically and a 1/4" shank straight bit with a 1/2" collar is used to create perfect 1/2" box joints - provided the bit is precisely 1/2" in diameter. I used the hinge mortise style because of the shorter carbide length. At first I used another brand (Porter Cable) of bit, and the results were very poor. It turned out that the diameter of the bit was almost 1/64" too large, so the joint fit was off by almost 1/32". Then I ordered your 1/2" bit (which is as near to 1/2" as I can measure with calipers) and the results are absolutely perfect joints. Great product!
