5 Useful Products for Containing DIY Project Mess
posted on by

One of the trickiest things about home DIY projects is keeping the mess contained. Demolition, sanding, sawing - they all spread dust and dirt and stuff through the air and through your house.

Here are five great products that will help you keep the mess contained to the workspace.

To keep the mess from being tracked through the house (whether it's mud and dirt from continuous trips outside, or sawdust from the worksite), try these:

Solematte Adhesive Floor Mat
Don't let your shop mess spread to your home and car. Simply stick the stack of Solematte adhesive floor mats to the floor near the exit of your workspace and remove the protective film to expose the adhesive. Step on the mat a couple of times each time you leave your shop to remove sawdust and other build-up from your footwear. When dirt stops sticking simply tear off and recycle the old sheet to expose a new one.

Carpet Shield Protective Film

Roll of self-adhesive film made of a special non-slip polyethylene blend. Easy to apply to any carpeted area to protect it from painting, remodeling, party messes and more. Makes a great temporary barrier for day- or weekend-long projects.

Multi-Surface Shield Protective Film
The Multi-Surface version shields hard surfaces (such as tile, marble, granite, vinyl, VCT, laminate and factory finished hardwood) from dirt, moisture and excess wear from heavy use. Self-adhesive film resists tears and punctures. Ideal for remodeling, painting, moving and more. 24" x 50' roll.

The mess isn't only spread by walking through the house, though, so creating a plastic dust barrier is essential for those really messy projects.

Zip n Close™

These press and stick zippers for plastic enclosures make it a breeze to create zippered doorway. Simply Affix the zipper at the desired location, then cut a slit in the plastic between the two halves of the zipper with a utility knife. You'll be able to get in and out as needed without fumbling around with the plastic and letting bunches of sawdust out.

FastCap 3rd Hand Extension
The 3rd Hand Extension is great for quickly creating a dust barrier by firmly holding the plastic from floor to ceiling wherever needed.

Additional accessories include Contoured Door Magnets that attach to the 3rd Hand Extension and allow you to easily create a door in the plastic barrier.

The 3rd Hand is a great multi-purpose tool. Here, you can see how easily it creates a dust barrier:

With a little forethought and some of these products, you'll save yourself a lot of clean-up after your project, and be able to enjoy the fruits of your labors that much sooner. Now you're ready to go and tackle that messy project!

Good ideas, but if you can stop the dust at the source you have a
head start on clean-up. If you want to know how, check out
rocklers line of festool's. I have the plunge cut saw, the domino
joiner, jig saw, router and vacum system. They may seem pricey
but after using them there well worth it. I have run both the
router and sander in a kitchen remodel with very little

I love the Zip N Close, I use it very often and it is extremely good at containing the mess.
