For those of you within traveling distance of the Twin Cities, here's something to mark on your calendar: Rockler's Minnetonka retail store will be holding their Carving Carnival on the weekend of May 6th and 7th.
What happens at a Carving Carnival? There's no shortage of attractions. The store's planning a weekend-long truckload sale of basswood and other carving woods, to go along with the special prices their offering on all carving tools, books and accessories. A Stubai tool rep will be there all weekend as well, giving advice on how to sharpen and use Stubai tools. The store staff will demonstrate the Tormek sharpening system. And there'll be a carving contest with a variety of carving categories and a chance to win great prizes.
You'll get a chance to watch renowned carvers Marv Kaisersatt and Ivan Whillock demonstrate their mastery of the craft, and if you want to sharpen your carving skills, you can sign up for a carving class with Mark Whillock and Chris Whillock. It's a great chance to learn from the best.
Over the weekend, the store will be collecting gently-used tools for Habitat for Humanity and sporting goods for the troops overseas, so when you're getting ready to go, remember to bring something along to pitch in.
There's more information on the Carving Carnival at the Minnetonka store's homepage. If you're planning to take one of the carving classes, remember that each class is limited to ten students. Call the store soon to sign up.
