How to Ensure Properly Sized Dowel Rods with a Simple Home-Made Gauge

Homemade Dowel Gauge

Dowels are often different sized, but this handy home-made dowel gauge will ensure you get the right sized.

Dowel diameters are notorious for being inconsistently milled, so it’s difficult to determine their exact size when you’re at the store picking one up. I made this dowel gauge with holes drilled for the two sizes I buy most often: 3/4″ and 1 inch. Whenever I buy dowels, I slip it into the pocket and test-fit both ends. This way my dowel supply is always accurate.
