Can You Use Wipe-on Varnish over Oil-based or Water-based Stains or Both

Q: I have seen several articles on oil-based wiping varnish and would like to know if this can be used over oil-based stain, water-based stain or both?

Applying a wipe-on varnish to stained wood There's actually not much difference between wiping and brushing varnishes, and both work well on top of stained wood.

A: Both. Wiping varnishes are little different from brushing varnishes. In fact, any varnish that you can brush on can be wiped on. And any stain that you can use brush-on varnish with, you can use with the wipe-on variety.
