I bought this used, and have made numerous bowls with it. It is smooth-running and quiet.I'd like to see a somewhat slower minimum speed, and more detents between those present. It's possible to take off the cover and modify it for just this purpose. (Look on line for instructions) Not sure I'd do this if I bought it new, though. Also, there's no handwheel, so the only way to remove a chuck is to insert a peg into the indexing hole.I'd have to say that the 3/4 hp motor is a bit underpowered for a 12" diameter over the bed (and up to 16" with powerhead rotation, although I haven't turned anything over 11" yet). But with sharp tools and care, it's easy to get beautiful work.Overall, I'm really happy with this lathe.

I've owned a Jet 1236 for about six months now, and I've really enjoyed using it. The only things I would change are the height (I recommend building your own base to raise it up a tad if you're over 5' 8"), and the solid faced manual rotation handle (you have to remove it to be able to pop out a taper jig). Aside from those two things, it has done everything I need it to do.

Okay beginner's lathe. Works better if you replace the belt with a link belt, and put a piece of plywood and make a shelf to put 100 lbs. of sand on the legs. Keep an eye out for the head stock and tail stock getting out of alignment -- pretty common. Other than that, I've had the lathe for over 5 years and it had turned all sorts of stuff.
