Overview

Sometimes called Mexican Ebony because of its extreme density and deepbrown color, Katalox has become known as one of the stiffest and strongest woods available. The heartwood is a rich, dark brown with notes of violet and purple, and darkens to nearly black with age. The creamy-white sapwood complements the darker heartwood nicely. It is often used as a substitute forebony in stringed instruments. Because of its density, Katalox is difficult to work, but the same qualities make it excellent for turning.
