I recently got the chance to use the round faced spokeshave (I own other models from Record and others), and was impressed at the quality for the price. The cap iron needed a little reshaping so it wouldn't trap chips and clog the throat, but otherwise this little shave performs well once the blade is correctly honed. The trick to using the round faced shave is to keep your thumbs on the front edge of the sole, next to the throat. This gives you the control to keep the spokeshave from rotating out of the cut. The other secret, besides keeping it razor sharp and taking a light cut, is to skew the shave whenever possible, just like with a bench plane, which lessens the cutting force and makes controlling the cut easier.

The round bottom spokeshave worked very poorly as received. After sharpening the blade, I could see a little improvement though still unacceptable chatter. After many trial and error adjustments of the blade protrusion and hand position, I got better results! however, still some chatter and lots of chip clogging.  The cap iron probably needs a little reshaping as may the spokeshave bed where the blades rests.

In received condition the tool qualifies for a fair rating. After regrinding and rehoning the blade, I got much better results. I found the blade hold down on my spokeshave to be almost too narrow for its pocket, i.e., the mounting tabs almost fail to engage. At the same time, I must say that I have been using the tool on hickory and getting acceptable results.
