I need a chuck for an old Craftsman Drill press. The quill on the press has a short taper, about 1 inch long, 5/8 in on the large end, 9/16 on the small end. I wonder if this chuck will fit my press?
Steve S
on Dec 30, 2015
The chuck itself keeps vibrating off of the taper. How do you keep it on? The one end of the taper seems secured in the lathe but the chuck will not stay secured to the opposite end. I'm using it with a simple bottle stopper mandrel.

BEST ANSWER: Your chuck isn't on the taper true. Knock it on a little harder with a mallet or hammer/block while the jaws are completely open.
Use a trustworthy straight piece of steel dowel stock or a non taper drill bit you don't mind getting bent and spin it up in the chuck. Check the dowel or drill it with a dial gauge while you spin it by hand.
Tap the rod accordingly, extremely gently. It takes a surprisingly light tap to adjust.
That'll work 90% of the time. If it doesn't, use a bearing press. Go slowly and make sure it's going on straight and mind not to bend the spindle.

I have the same problem. Well almost. My taper/chuck keeps vibrating out of the head stock. So I bring the tailstock up to hold it in place. But if I cut that brand new, shiny taper, will it fit more snuggly? I seem to recall seeing someone mention that on a youtube video.
I clamped it in a vise then took a deadblow hammer to seat it. Haven't had an issue.

BEST ANSWER: Look up "Machine Taper" on Wikipedia. There is a table that gives the dimensions for Morse Taper 2 units. Note that some MT1 units are a bit longer than specified and if you use an adapter, say from MT1 to MT2, you may have to slightly shorten the MT1 unit.

the normal thread size is 1/4 20 for the draw bolt. If you intend to use the tool without a tailstock in place there is a possibility that the tool will slip out of the morse taper, but only if in the headstock, the tail stock will hold the tool because there will be pressure against it while in use.

- J P on May 14, 2015
morse taper has no threads, the taper in the spindle should match the taper of the shaft you are trying to insert, that is the only thing you need to be concerned about and if the tapers dont match it won't stay in.

BEST ANSWER: I'M really not sure. Sorry. I think an M2 tapered attachment would fit your lathe, if I understood your question.

Can this be used in the headstock without a tailstock spindle or will it fly out?

Lathe chuck and tapers
I am glad I ordered these; they have been used much more than I ever expected to. Getting a good start on hollowing is vital, and these tools make the job fast and easy. Nicely done Rockler.

Robust and Works Great
I bought this because the store employee recommended it and showed my how it works with different mandrels. I'm new to turning and was thinking I needed to spend a lot more money to accomplish what I was trying to do. So instead of buying a more expensive set of jaws, he helped me understand why this part would fit my needs better, and as I expand my turning abilities I can move up to a set of jaws for my Excelsior lathe.

Boring but good
Bird house ornaments are this year's Christmas gifts. The drill chuck with the #2 Morse Taper makes the process work faster and better.
The chuck does not slip in the tail stock and aligns very well making drilling more accurate and easier than the drill press.
I recommend it.

Excellent tool
Works great once I cut the end off the chuck. I have a Jet mini lathe and the chuck would not lock in place, but it doe now.

Great drill chuck, well priced, works as advertised. The tab at the end of the taper is a hold-out from a metal lathe. The tab is aligned vertically when inserted into the tailstock, it locks into a slot in the tailstock which helps it grip better.

I bought this chuck to work...
I bought this chuck to work with my Excelsior Mini Lathe. Wasn't sure if I needed a #1 or #2 Morse taper and couldn't find the lathe specs. Anyway, I bought the #2 and it seems to work just fine. One comment for consideration: The description of the chuck didn't make clear that it was a taper fit. I expected a 1/2" X 8 TPI threaded unit. Anyhow, I'm happy with the set up.

I bought the Chuck with a #2 Taper for my Craftsman Mini lathe. Right out of the box I was impressed with the fit and finish. It is working nicely and seems very durable. I question the tab at the end of the taper, I have to remember to extend the Tail Stock a little before installing the chuck but that's not a big deal. Very nice product, highly recommended.

This drill chuck works great in my wood lathe both in the headstock for arbors and in the tailstock for drilling. I purchased a #1 Morse taper with it and they fit together perfect.

I would recommend this chuck, I did not like having to purchase the morse taper separately. It should come as a set

Deceptive advertising, good product
Works great. Advertising is deceptive, it is really two pieces sold separately, but photos shows the two as if it were one piece not two.

This is a good solid drill...
This is a good solid drill chuck. It holds well and is well aligned. I do have a gripe with the pictured #2 taper. The tab at the end does not fit into either the headstock or the tailstock of my Delta 46-460. So I ground it off. Then it works fine. I don't really see the purpose of it. The chuck is keyed and should require no assistance other than the key to open. The taper is popped out by a ram so what exactly is that tab for I don't know. Grinding it off was annoying and time consuming. So I knocked down the rating 1 point.

I have a Jet mid sized...
I have a Jet mid sized lathe. Since I am new to turning and what works with what I bought the #2 taper with the chuck. It is the correct size and both work well with my lathe. The taper is a bit longer then the ones I have been using, though, so when I put it in the tailstock I need to extend it out a bit for the taper to seat in all the way. Other then that they both work great and I am very happy.

The Taper and Chuck are "all in one", but actually are sold separately. Not a big problem though. The quality of the products is great and they do work really well.

this works ok but the taper is an inch and a half longer than the live end and won't allow the screw shaft on the tail stock to screw all the way back because it knocks the taper out. It gives you only 1 inch of travel when drilling without moving the tail stock. I'm thinking about cutting it off but I'm afraid it would make it run untrue.

OK, but...
The chuck works fine for my needs, however the #2 morse taper is too long, and does not allow me to turn to the "0" setting on the scale on my Jet lathe...

Good company but disappointed.
Every photo shown on Rockler site depicts this chuck with the taper. If you don't read the fine print you don't find out the taper must be ordered separately. This caused delay for me as I ended up sending unit back for refund and ordering what I had wanted from another company for less money. Disappointed that more effort is not made to depict correct photos with items being sold.
