- Leigh D4R Pro 24" Dovetail Jig w/Accessory Kit
Overview
Create the look of hand-cut dovetails on stock up to 24" wide with your router and the Leigh D4R Pro Dovetail Jig — plus get great dust collection and 12 additional router bits with the AC D24 Accessory Kit!
The D4R features adjustable guide fingers, freeing you from the need to dimension your workpiece to suit the jig and providing infinite options for pin and tail width and spacing. Whatever the width of your stock, you can get a half-pin on the top and the bottom and custom spacing in between, meaning that you're never limited to repetitive, obviously machine-made joints. The D4R can handle boards up to 24" wide and 1-1/4" thick and comes with three cutters, cam-action speed clamps, crosscut bar, angled side stop, screwdriver, all mounting hardware, 160-page user guide and instructional DVD. Router with a 1/2" collet required.
The accessory kit includes the (VRS) vacuum and router support, for full-width router support and dust-free routing, as well as a 12 piece Leigh bit set.

Total noob at woodworking here. I'm trying to figure out what parts go with what other parts. What I have is a router and a router table. What do I need to buy to ultimately make the cool isoloc wave, clover, etc joints (after lots of practice)? I wanted to use the table router with RTJ400 but it looks like that doesn't work with the fancy templates. It looks like I need the DR Pro jig and the templates (sold separately, of course). I went to a Rockler store, but the guy I talked to kind of blew me off.

Leigh D4R Pro 24" Dovetail Jig w/Accessory Kit

Distinctive Series Dovetail Templates, Style A

Rockler's Complete Dovetail Jig with Dovetail Jig Dust Collector Combo
BEST ANSWER: Hi Linda,
It's been nearly 2 years since I upgraded to the Leigh Jig system. When I purchased my system, they provided very thorough instructions in both print and video formats. If this is your first dovetail jig system, you're walking right to the Rolls-Royce of them all (in my opinion). Leigh has some unique features incorporated into their system that can make dovetailing a much more satisfying experience for beginners and professionals alike. Dovetail jigs are primarily designed for hand held use only. One should have a fair amount of experience operating, maintaining and caring for a hand held router before attempting dovetail routing. I won't assume your experience level, and only mention it for the sake of safety. I have the D4R system which will accept the unique templates you have interest in. I happen to own the "clover" template, but have yet to use it. Leigh seems to be good about giving complete information about all necessary bits and guide bushings when purchasing their accessories. Whatever brand of jig you ultimately land on, this is a craft that will take some practice and patience to master, but it's well worth it. There is no substitute for a tight ffitting drawer joint that could out live your grandchildren! Hope this helped. Remember, safety first.

will the D4R make minature dovetails?
Dan B
on Sep 4, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Hi Dan -- By using Leigh bits 50-8 and 60-8, you can create tiny through dovetails in material 3/8" or less in thickness. The jig was not originally designed for it, because the TD PINS scale doesn't go down far enough. Thus you have to space the boards away from the jig face with a shop-made block fitted with its own side stop (a thin piece of stock glued to the block, and drilled with countersunk holes to allow it to be fastened to the jig with a flat-head machine screw). The foregoing is a paraphrase of the instructions on pp. 29-30 of the D4R Pro User Guide; I have not used the jig this way myself. To confirm, you might call Jan Heath at Leigh. They have an 800 number which Rockler's computer program won't let me provide here. She is very helpful, and I'm sure would be willing to answer all your questions, even if you haven't bought the jig yet. Also check the Leigh web site. By the way, I found it very useful to order the demonstration disk for the jig and to view it both before I bought it and then again before I used it the first time. It's a wonderful tool.

Depends on your definition of miniature dovetails. The minimum width is determined by the width of the aluminum fingers. With a small cutter and router guide you should be able to make quite small dovetails. BTW, the D4R is a very good machine for larger case work as blanket chests, etc.

Be aware to use properly takes some practice
Purchased this jig to do a series of drawers for a project - spent one evening just reading the manual before even taking the rest of the jig out of the box. Spent the next evening just putting the thing together and getting comfortable with the working of the machine - I cut a lot of practice pieces and was glad I did - there are a lot of fine adjustments and getting a feel for working with the jig takes some time. Spent several evenings working though different practice joints to get the feel of things with the router - once you do a few you get a feel for how everything works together - I don't think you are simply going to make great joints right out of the box - I have cut about 30 joints with it now and have not noticed any of the slipping referenced in other reviews - the fingers lock tight on my jig and don't move I do have the vacuum attachment and it is wonderful for support - still quite a lot of shavings, but not nearly as much as without the attachment - the support is the really great part - really makes using the jig much easier - be careful when attaching the arms to the support - the first time I had them in the center and the router wouldn't go all the way to the left - also the router guides do tend to slip out if you are not careful - several of the cuts that they advertise - sliding dovetail and angled dovetails - are not really covered in the manual - you have to go to other locations to get instructions - there are some YouTube videos from the company that are pretty good and they send those on DVD as well - overall a good jig - I have used several other jigs and this is a little more complicated but is easily the best I have used.
