We bought the lighter weight lifts for our upper kitchen cabinets several years ago, and thought we had ordered the heavier ones for the largest door. The lighter weight lift operates to lift the larger door, but it slowly falls half way down, so we're ordering the stronger 150 to keep the door up. We have really enjoyed having the cabinet doors open upwards.

Would they work on a trap door on a play house?
Ed R
on Jun 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Perhaps. It would depend on the weight of the trap door and on its design.
The overview section of the product page shows the recommended door weights for the various gas spring models. If your door is within one of these weight limits you should be OK - tho if I were you I would maybe get a more powerful spring than the table indicates in order to compensate for the fact that I believe these springs are designed to lift a vertically hung ( e.g. hinged at the top) door.
A bigger issue for you might be how wide the springs open. You can see from the photos on the product page that the hinge assembly will limit the opening angle to less than 90 deg - which for a trap door would mean that entry/exit thru the trap door will likely require bending/crawling thru an opening on one side only.
Good luck

Ed . . . They are not designed to hold weight beyond that of a cabinet door, so you could not use them for a door in a floor that opened downward. If there is a location to install the brackets in your playhouse structure, they could be used to hold open a door that opened upward into the playhouse as long as there are stops in the floor opening to support the door when closed and if the door size and weight is not greater than the limitations of the Lid Support.

I used them to hold open the lids on a toy boxes for my daughters. The lid weighs about 10 or 12 pounds and they work great. They create a slow close action until the last couple of inches.
If your trap door is 15 pounds or less, these should work for you.

my closet door will not close all the way. how do I adjust the gas pressure?
Judy V
on May 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi Judy,
I believe it he's more to do with the location of the mounting brackets. I'm not sure if there is any physical adjustments on the spring itself.
If it is possible to disconnect one of the brackets (ideally one with more room to be relocated), and close the door then mark the location of the bracket with the door in the closed position. Once you mount it and reattached the spring, it should close all the way.
I hope this helps!

can they be used in combination with european hinges when the door is inserted in the frame, not overlayed?

on Jun 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have used these many times with the European style hinges and they have worked perfectly. However, I have not used them on an inlay door. However, the principles are still the same with the hinges whether they are inlay or overlay and the same would go for the gas springs. The hinge determines how the door opens and the gas springs only hold it up, so I would say that you should be fine.

Although I have not installed the Lift-O-Mate Gas Spring Lid Support with the european hinges, I see no reason they would not work well in this application if they are properly set back into the cabinet. A shelf may need to be notched or narrowed to accommodate the lift when the door is closed.

They should work, the placements would have to be recalculated. But the biggest must is the hinges need to be a free swing, no spring or soft close. Doing a mock-up would be advisable

Part 32924 (smallest version of this hinge): what are the dimensions of the bracket face attachment for the part of the hinge that attaches to the cabinet door? BEST ANSWER: The part of the hinge at the top of the door is 3 inches wide, with 3 screws. The outside screws fasten at 3/4 inch in, and the middle screw fastens at 1 inch in. The part of the hinge with the arm is attached at 1 !/4" with screws and the metal extends 1 5/8" from the edge of the door. You will need at least 1/4 inch to make room for the screws to hold. In other words, the top frame of your door needs to be 1 1/4" and the edge of your frame needs to be 1 5/8".

BEST ANSWER: I think that even with one on each side, you may be pushing it. My suggestion is that (depending on where you live) you go to your closest marine hardware supplier and see what he has in stock. Boats use these frequently and most marine equipment dealers have a variety of gas springs.

How do you know where to mount gas springs for first time installation (not replacement)? I have a cedar storage box with a lid that weighs over 100 lbs. and is 10' x 40". I cannot lift it without some assistance.

BEST ANSWER: Mel . . . These gas spring supports, even the most heavy duty, are not likely to hold your 100 pound lid open. They should help a bit with the load however. I am surprised that there is nothing in the installation instructions about hardware placement. If you look at the drawing, the lid is open to about 80 degrees. Lid side bracket attachment is down from the top about 25% of the total door height. Since the hardware has to fold into the cabinet when closed, you should be able to attach the door end, hold the door open to about 80 degrees, fully extend the movable rod in the device and determine the inside cabinet end location. Make sure the door end bracket is far enough away from the edge of the door to avoid interference but still aligns with the inside of the cabinet bulkhead when closed and that the bracket that mounts to the inside of the cabinet bulkhead is set far enough back from the front edge of the cabinet to allow the door to close completely.

Hello. I have completed the Rockler Steamer Trunk plan with a 15.2 lb white maple lid. Lid is 20 inches deep from hinges in back to front edge. I'd like to use 150N LiftOMat gas springs, attached to inside of box side, and other end of lift attached to inside of the side of the lid. My question is: can you tell me specific attach points for both ends of Lift OMat in this application? There will be one gas spring on each side, and I'd like to place them on inside of lid & box to keep them out of the way as much as possible. Don't want to misplace them and mess up nice interior of box/lid.

Four Glass doors in a bookcase
I was worried that these 1/4 safety glass doors would be too heavy for the hardware.
They are about 2 feet square with a 3in painted poplar frame.
I got the strongest set and they work very well.
We followed the directions and the installation was smooth.
Our only trouble was that, since the doors are in pairs, we had to play around a bit to get the doors aligned when open.
But the clients love them so I look like a genius.

Great product.
It does the job intended for, good quality and strong. It requires 2 people for installation but an experience carpenter can do it alone.

Heavy duty lift holds door up easily
We had purchased the lighter weight lift, and the door was too heavy for the lift to raise it all the way up. When we ordered the heavy duty lift, it now raises and holds in the up position.

Finally hardware that operates well in applications where doors need to open up- and stay open.Function: helps lift up door after the initial motion- combine with soft-close for smooth operation when closing.Installation: use own screws ( which you do anyway ), by location on door and cabinet, select range of motion and power to help the door open and close. Spring can be removed from mounting bracket by ( carefully ) pulling up tension spring with screwdriver.Great product, thank you Rockler!

I needed to re-engineer two kitchen cabinets from normal operation to a vertical lift open (to accomodate a new refrigerator). I was worried because each door was almost 20 lbs. But the lifts hold the doors very nicely. (I could only install one lift on each door). Assuming these lifts wear well, they are a great product.

After trying several spring loaded & friction type lid supports, I finally found something that works. They are supporting a vertically opening cabinet door that is part of a range hood/cabinet combo. I installed per the included instructions, but realized I didn't need the full 90 degree open angle. It was easily corrected by lowering the bottom attaching position.Best of all, my wife is extremely happy with the way these function as we've been "fighting" with this cabinet door for five years.

Project used the 150 model to...
Project used the 150 model to support the opening and closing of a maple lid (panel door) to a audio mixing board enclosure. The lid weighs about 16 pounds. The gas springs work well as expected. They hold the lid upright in a vertical position very well when open. No chance of it falling shut. Requires a bit of a tug to get the lit to begin to close, then the gas springs assist in easing down the lid to about the last foot at which point the gas springs have little effect and gravity takes over. When opening, the gas springs make the lid self opening once it is up about a foot. But you do need to hang onto it so it does not pop open too fast.

I purchased these hinges to install on the lid of a built-in toy box under a bay-window. It was primarily to provide safety for our grandchildren when they open the vertical-opening lid (weight approx. 10 lbs.) A side benefit is that the hinges also restrict the lid from going past 90 degrees and crashing into the plantation shutters mounted in the bay-window. They work well.

These work great. I learned two things others might want to know. When using with a door with glass, the hinges need to be placed directly over the lift-o-mats, otherwise the door will be pulled out of shape. Also the door will close very fast. Blumotion stops solve that problem.(See pic)

I used this product in the application of a lid support for a child's play table. Obviously, the lid was horizontal as opposed to the vertical positioning intended for these per their design. That said, the hold-open capability of these is excellent and perform perfectly with one caveat. When the lid is being closed (which requires downward pressure to do so) the last four inches of travel are unsupported. Thus, the lid "slams" shut from about four inches. In my application, this unsupported travel distance was acceptable.

The product is fine but I used it on a 23" x 37" by 3/4" mdf door, approx 16 to 17 lbs and it failed to keep the door open at all. I found a 250n strut with help from Rockler and it works fine, although its so powerful it is ripping the euro hinges out . Sometimes architects should be made to build the designs they come up to see if it works so us carpenters in the field don't have to go through all the avenues to find it does not.

My project was to use a pair of the 150 set on a large malamine door 36"x27"x3/4" that hinges at the top and covers a laundry chute. The arms did a credible job but they will not fully extend, presumably because of the weight of the door. There does seem to be a limit as to what you can expect from the arms.

COSTLY "temporary" solution
It took over a year of planning & research for "solutions" to built my own kitchen cabinets, in hopes to get the function I want & SAVE money in the process. I used these hinges on 7 doors & was so proud of how clever I was!!!!.... The hinges were awesome, COMPACT (critical for me) and functional... for about 1 year of low to medium use. After a year, the doors will open only half way and fast decline thereafter; another 6 months, they will slam shut as soon as you stop holding the door! Honestly, I feel all my "savings" will vanish in a few years, as now I am stuck with a design/function I need to "maintain" by replacing 7 sets of hinges every year or so! This is just so wrong on so many levels! Please bring in a direct RELIABLE replacement of these hinges as I don't want to buy new ones every couple of years or even worse, "stock-up" a safe supply of them before you discontinue the line due to lousy performance.
