- Mirka Abranet 5'' Pad Protectors (9955RP), 2-Pack
Overview
If you plan to make extensive use of Abranet mesh abrasives, these sanding pad protectors will help to prevent premature wear on your sanding pad. Continuous and aggressive sanding with Abranet can sometimes be hard on sanding pads since dust and debris can migrate freely through the abrasive discs. To remedy this, the protector is positioned between the backing pad and the sanding disc to provide cushioning and protection.
Features:
- Prolongs the life of your sanding pad
- Randomized hole patten fits any 5'' sander
- Hook-and-loop on one side, Grip on the other—just place between the sanding pad and the abrasive disc
- Low cost and easily replaced
- Helps to improve dust collection through Abranet mesh

For sanders with hook & loop pads, how should the pad protector be attached to the sander and Abranet disc; IOW does the hook & loop of the pad protector attach to the hook & loop of the sander pad or to the hook & loop of the Abranet disc?

BEST ANSWER: the pad protector is attached to the sander first, the sanding disc goes on over the top of the protector.

Does the pad protector permit the use of 5-hole, non-Abranet sanding disks on a sander with an 8-hole pad?

BEST ANSWER: It might. But depending on what you're sanding it's very likely to clog up. I think fine dust would be fine but if it catches any drywall paper or anything like that it will just clog up.

Work reasonably well on Festool 125
I bought these to use mirka abranet sanding discs with my festool ets 125 sander. I was sanding drywall and wanted to see if the sanding discs lasted longer than the festool Granat paper. These actually clogged really quickly with the pulp from the paper on the drywall panels and the dust collection went from Excellent to nonexistent in about 2 minutes of sanding. I still think they have promise but probably best to stick to wood.

Extra protection?
I read somewhere (Mirka literature?) that the "velcro" hooks on the Mirka pads can be detrimental to the hook-loop pads on sanders. So just in case, I use these. Ive tried them on my old Porter Cable 5" VS random, orbital sander. For a Festool sander, I punched a hole in the center of the pad. Wish these had a center hole for those. Im still checking out the Abranet sanding discs. So far they are appealing and dust collection is good - no worry about lining up particular holes on the sander. I'll use the pad protectors if there is otherwise an increased risk to an expensive sander pad. They do add some cushion too, which may help on some surfaces.
