Finished product is beautiful, getting there...

GARY D Posted September 29, 2007
Finished product is beautiful, getting there can be a challenge. Buy extra blanks and tubes. Most burls are unpredictable, but this one especially. I blew out two blanks to make three pens, using very light pressure.Fitting tubes can be tedious, all but one blank I drilled required reaming. I suspect this is just the burl becoming "unkinked" as growth strains are relieved.I recommend sharp tools and light cuts to get close to final diameter and make the final profile using files. Sand to fill voids and apply CA glue on them to make a solid fill.A relativey expensive and tedious wood to work, but the end result is awesome.
