Like others, I needed a brace...

Phillip C from Davis, CA Posted May 4, 2009
Like others, I needed a brace replacement when the original brace cracked under pressure from a stout dinner guest. The replacement brace was slightly more pointed than depicted in the photo. Very minor issue as I rounded it by sanding to conform to the original. Also, the curve of the brace was not quite the same as the original. Again, a minor issue as I wiggled the replacement brace around to where it met seat and chair spindle well enough. After staining to match, the replacement is virtually the same as the original. I upgraded the screw mounting on chair spindle side to increase the structural integrity of the whole assembly. For the bottom, I bolted it. That should hold it for a while!I'd like to see original manufacturers do the same. This is a very common manufacturing defect on these style chairs.

The braces had to be clamped...

Kennard W from Traverse City, MI Posted April 18, 2008
The braces had to be clamped while the screws were installed, which is good since they put positive tension on the back of the chair. Sanding was unnecessary due to using a high quality primer which filled the grain lines.

One of 4 pairs I received...

Lee B from Redmond, OR Posted December 14, 2011
One of 4 pairs I received were a little substandard in that there were wrinkles on the inside curve. This actually suited the very old chairs I installed them on, so it wasn't a visual problem. I am surprised another reviewer returned them because they didn't fit. It would be impossible to make a universal one of these. The concave back of the brace fits the vertical piece and the bottom must be sanded or planed to fit, which is fairly simple to do. As you accomplish that, you can make sure that the braces fit without stress on them, so they'll be at maximum strength to do their job. Without these braces, the four chairs I worked on would have ended up in the landfill. Thank you, Rockler.
