Overview

Pizza Cutter/Bottle Opener Turning Mandrel. For fans of our premium Pizza Cutter and Bottle Opener Turning Kits, here is a handy mandrel that will have you cranking out turned handles like hotcakes. With a shoulder diameter that matches the final turned diameter of your handles, the Pizza Cutter/Bottle Opener Turning Mandrel eliminates the guesswork and repetitive measuring that you previously had to do as you brought the blank down to size. The mandrel also features a post that threads directly into the handle insert that comes with the turning kits, a touch that makes chucking the handle into your lathe simpler than ever before.

Recommended accessory for the following turning kits:

Technical Details:

Works fine but ...

Peter Posted January 10, 2014
The threaded shaft length is 5/8" while the insert for the bottle opener is 3/4". I'd like the mandrel shaft to be at least 1" long, matching the length of the bottle opener shaft for added stability. Before buying this item, I made my own out of 5/16" threaded rod with a couple nuts (instructions on back of packaging). I used it first to drive in the threaded insert so it would be straight but found the blank would wobble unless the shaft was locked into the wood blank.
It also would be nice if the larger shaft was cut with three flats for better attached to the chuck. This would keep everything from slipping.

Have Used It Twice, Don't Recommend

I'm in agreement with Peter, above. Additionally to all of what he said, it does aid the turning, but the live center is still necessary. I, too, will be making my own with 5/8" threaded stock and a couple of nuts. This item is not long enough to support a 6" piece strongly enough even for light sanding. I will not recommend this product to others.
