Love the soft start, and the on/off switchs location. Great router lots of power.
This is the fifth Porter Cable router that I have. Still own and use the others. Just needed a plunge router.

Plunge Router -- Great
I needed a plunge router for a few different projects. I had selected a different one along with a base and the router guides to go with it. The sales person brought me over to the Porter-Cable and although it was a little more expensive, I saved by not having to purchase other items to go with the router I had selected. I have been playing with the templates and the router and absolutely love it. Controls fantastic. Easy to set up and use.

What took so long?
Before buying this router I had 5 other routers 3 trim 2 plunge. I kept telling myself you don't need another router, but I bought it anyways and I'm very happy with the purchase. Very smooth, very controllable. I've seen a lot of guys on job sites with this router that should speak for itself.

I don't know what all the negative reviews are about. Possibly someone got a "lemon". I have had this router for about a year and it has performed extremely well. The ease of switching from plunge to fixed base is quite easy. You can purchase other accessories for it but that is true of virtually any power tool you purchase. I had been using a Craftsman 1 1/2 HP router and still do in my router table. I haven't tried this one in my table yet. I would say if you have/had a problem with this router, call PC their customer service seems to be pretty good from my experience.

Great router. Quality plunge base and fixed base. I recommend getting the speed lift handle if using the fixed base in a router table. It's quieter than my 1 3/4 PC router.

The package met my needs. I have a fixed base 690 series router, which I want to leave on my table. I bought this package so I could plunge cut mortises in a cherry bed headboard I was making. It worked fine. It will also reduce time moving one router from the table to portable use.

Rethinking PC Routers
I've only used PC Routers so I'm biased but...this last purchase is making me think I should switch. Although my shop is set up for PC I'm going to try another brand. This router is very hard to plunge and pops up during a pass and it only came with one wrench. Only one wrench?

I purchased this router about a...
I purchased this router about a year ago. It has been in a router table right from the start. I do like the router but did have a problem right from the start, the cast aluminum clamp that is used to tighten the motor in the base wallowed out right away and I could not get replacement part for it. They have been on back order now for over six months. The biggest problem that I have had with the router is that when it is mounted under the router table, the dust created when routing gets between the base and the motor making the it almost impossible to make adustments up and down and/or getting the motor out of the base to clean the dust out. I remedied this problem by purchasing a hight quality lift from Incra Tools, the rounter with this lift is a dream to use now and I am very happy with it. No complaints about the motor or any issues other the parts availabilty and the dust getting into the base.

This is the first router I...
This is the first router I have ever owned. I like the easy of changing bases and depths. I also like the double on off switch. But on the motor that I have the switch already had some issues with moving on and off. The shaft lock pin also does not function fully like it should and I have to tap it with a hammer to free it up so it moves into place. Other than that I have nothing bad to say about it. The speed control is nice and easy to use. The soft start and full speed operation is smooth! I wanted to use the plunge base for my router table that I am building but it just does not have the clearance. So at this point I am working with the fixed base and so far so good. The handles do come off with ease which is nice. Overall at this point I give it a 7/10. Owned it only for two weeks now If I would not have had issues with the switch I would give it a 8 or 9/10

One thing to be wary of is how many accessories are available for this router. It can be difficult to find and purchase bases and bushings/templates. Don't make the mistake I made in purchasing a router before learning none of my accessories fit it.

This router overheats. After running a dadoe bit through light cuts (about 20 minutes run time), the bit, collet, and motor were almost hot enough to fry an egg. I did an internet search about this and found numerous similar complaints. Some solutions that Porter Cable customer service suggested to these owners was to try a new collet. That did not seem to improve the problem.Anyways, I can't complain about Rockler. They took the Porter Cable router back and exchanged it for a Bosch. I love the new Bosch router. It has all of the same features as the PC and it doesn't overheat.

This router is junk, I would reconmend you buy a different router, This router didn't hold up for me,and I only used it once in a while. I bought mine about a 1 1/2 years ago and the armature and speed control are both shot and would cost more to fix than a new one.Do some more research seams like all these 890 series routers are all doing the same thing.
