I just received my hvlp sprayer system. I purchased it because of the great reviews I read. I use mine for finish work on turned bowls. No brush marks and a smooth finish. Everone was right! What a pleasure to use and great results. Should have bought it sooner.

This spray system is absolutely perfect for beginning and intermediate spray finishers. I've had limited success with the so called 'professional' spray guns. I've had 100% success with the Rockler HVLP spray system everytime I've used it. I have only sprayed lacquer through the system but guess other materials work just as well. It is easy to set up and easy to clean up. There are only two settings, 1. the amount of material being sprayed and, 2. the spray pattern. Over spray is minimal. Completely cleaning the gun after each use is absolutely necessary. I remove all parts and clean each piece individually. In addition, I place a drop of oil on moving parts as I re-assemble prior to storing the gun. If you have not been able to master adjusting the air to material ratio on the so called professional guns, the Rockler HVLP spray system is the system for you.

I am a true home hobby woodworker, a beginner/novice at best. I have no experience using commercial spraying equipment. All I do know is that this machine has saved me tons of time and the results are amazing. Setting up and using this machine was super simple. Clean up was just as easy. Spray some thinner (I use naptha) through it and rinse/wipe down the container and done. This machine will also save lots of money by purchasing poly in the quart and spraying versus purchasing poly in aerosol form. Totally satisified with this purchase.

I recently purchased this to spray some interior trim and doors. I also intend to use it for all of my upcoming kitchen cabinets {currently in construction phase}. The system performed very well for what I wanted it to do. Thus far I have only sprayed lacquer, but am very happy with the results and the performance of the equipment. It is very reasonably priced {I purchased when the 18% off sale was going on and had free shipping}. I am wondering why I used a brush for all of those years!

I was a little skeptical at first. I have a large compressor and an HVLP bought from a big box store. Built a large cabinet for the garage and I was really disappointed at the performance of the gun. So when it came time to refinish some chairs I figured I should try this as it couldn't be worse than what I went thru.

What a difference. It worked perfectly and I would definitely recommend it

First Time I have used a sprayer and it works great. Key is mixing the paint and get the correct viscocity . I used latex and also added Floetrol and then strained the paint to get any lumps out Do not put the coats on thick better to put on a thin uniform coat and then a second coat etc Very surprised how smooth the finish is I am guessing part of that maybe the Floetrol. Much better then brushing Sorry I hadn't purchased on of these years ago enjoy

Very impressed with this product so far. Received as Christmas gift to paint a large built in bookshelf/cabinet unit which I have been avoiding because it takes nearly a full day to hand paint a single coat. Haven't tried it for its intended purpose yet, but have been painting many scrap pieces and an old hutch as practice. A few observations which (hopefully) will help any future users of product. -I have had good success with the small tip with Benjamin Moore interior semi-gloss as long paint is properly thinned. -As a previous reviewer mentioned thin with a 4:2:1 ratio of paint:polycrylic:floetrol. I have also had to add a little water to this mixture as the Benjamin Moore seems exceptionally thick. A flow rate of 16-19 seconds in the included viscosity cup has worked for me. I believe water based polyurethane can be used in place of polycrylic, but I have not tried this. -When applying {especially to vertical surfaces} resist the urge to add too much. Because it is thinned quite a bit it will run if too thick. Apply until you just see a uniform wet coat - NO MORE! If you accept that 2 maybe 3 coats will be necessary for adequate coverage, then this is easier to do. Have not tried with stains, clear finishes, or oil based products yet, but have no doubt it will perform well based on my experience so far. Absolutely a great product for the price.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I used this HVLP sprayer this morning with excellent results using latex-based Porter brand paint. This is only the second time I have used it and have never spray finished before. The first time I rushed the setup process and got terrible results. Other posts are right: take the time to get the setup and viscosity right and you will be impressed. Several things to note:
1-The gun arrives with the larger tip that is for oil-base. Replace right away w/ supplied 0.9mm tip if using latex paint.
2}Thin to proper viscosity. I added a lot of filtered water. Thought I was adding too much, but worked out.
3}Put up plastic like a Dexter kill room{ShowTime series}. Inevitably, I ended up spraying at such an angle that I sprayed other things in my garage.
4}Test on a scrap piece first and adjust.
5}Clean the entire gun. Remove all pieces and clean well.
I am a novice at this and the finish turned out great. Read other reviews for excellent tips. Supplied instructions are minimal at best. Good Luck!

I bought this to spray different finishes about 4 years ago. I have a hvlp spray gun dedicated to spray lacquer, this gun was about 1/3 the price and produces a top quality finish. Works great for latex paints lacquer, stains and poly well worth the money.

I have not used it much, but have read all the reviews and find them surprising...rarely do I find a product with sooooo, many excellent reviews. The manual is not much to be desired, but general. I am new to HVLP, and would have liked to see a manual with more info about how/why to adjust the gun, and more on how to mix/thin water-based finishes. I still have no idea how far too turn the fluid adjustment in/out to provide an optimal spray. I realize it tells me to turn clockwise for less, and counter for more, but what is less & more when it comes to a nice spray. I will experiment and find a setting. I must say that if the sprayer lives up to it's reviews, I will be very happy. If someone was totally un-familiar with the mechanics of a HVLP sprayer (like I am)! when plugging it in I thought it was a defective one, because I had no idea it was supposed to leak air out of both hose ends, ha

I bought this sprayer about nine months ago and have since used it on about 7 projects and everyone has been a great experience. I have sprayed stain, oil based, water based paints and lacquers and have had no problem at all. The thicker stuff takes some patience with thinning but setup and cleanup are awesome. You can't beat this for the price especially if you get it on sale. Also today the hose actually kinked and split today. I called Rockler and they are sending out a new one. Great product, great support!

Just began my first project with this system, and it's working wonderfully. Applied two coats of Glidden Gripper primer to a new set of poplar stair risers, then will coat with three coats of Sherwin-Williams latex acrylic semi-gloss. The HVLP unit is easy to use, and lays down nice, thin, even coats. My only complaint-and it's minor-with the entire system is the terribly written amd vague user's manual that's included, and that nowhere in the manual or in the packaging is there any information on ordering replacement parts such as filters, replacement needles, etc. Great tool, though! you won't be disappointed. Looking forward to using it with some oil-based materials.

Editor's note: Replacement filters and other parts are available by calling 800-260-9663.

I was extremely apprehensive about ruining all my work by messing up the finish, but this sprayer ended up laying down the finest finish I've ever done. Catalysed lacquer finish, two coats. Twenty seconds viscosity was too heavy, 10-12 seconds was just right. The secret was wet coats, one side at a time. I could flip the pieces over after five to ten minutes to finish the other side. I let the pieces dry overnight, but they are hard enough to sand in an hour. The receptacle for the gun is essential when handling many pieces. The pump is a bit loud, but much quieter than my air compressor whenever it kicks in.

Tried this sprayer for the first time today. My previous experience with hvlp {gravity feed gun and air compressor} was not a good one. Enough of the reviews for this system were positive enough that I decided to take a chance on it. I read all the reviews to search for tips and looked at some youtube videos. I used the smaller tip. I mixed 4 parts latex paint, 2 parts Minwax Polycrylic, 1 part Latex X-tender then filtered the mix through a medium mesh paint strainer. It worked great right from the get go. The setting on the single control was very friendly. I could spray within a range of 4 complete turns on the knob. The finish was smooth and clean. Clean up was easy {especially compared to my previous system}. I have a Dishmaster faucet in my shop and all it took was a quick scrub for the sprayer to look like it hadn't ever been used. Would give it a 5 rating if there had been decent instructions with the sprayer and I hadn't had to do all the research on my own. I still haven't figured out what the short piece of large diameter flexible hose is to be used for.

Editors note:  That short piece of flex hose material is only part of the packaging, used to prevent damage during shipment.

This is the first spray gun of any type that I have ever used. I’ve done a lot of rattle can work over the years. So, I’m not exactly new to the issues of spraying. I was a little apprehensive about my first experience…expecting the worst and hoping to be surprised. I used it to spray some water-based poly on a closet system I built shelves and drawers. It went great! I was completely surprised at how easy and quick everything went and very pleased with the results. As others have said, the prep process took longer than spraying and clean-up another vote for the extra can. Even the drawers turned out good! although, next time, I’ll put the bottoms in after finishing. Had a couple of runs on my first coat but, by the second coat, I had it all figured out. Excellent tool! I’ll be doing much less brush work in the future.

This is a must have item in the shop. I've been woodworking for 12 years. I've used mini spray guns and larger spray guns with a small compressor. Never could get it dialed in so I gave up and have been finishing products by hand. Bought this a couple months ago and finally got a chance to get it out and use it. I used the smaller needle as I was spraying a water-based finish. Didn't take anytime to get it dialed in for both fan and circle spraying. Layed down 3 coats in a matter of hours. Took more time to get everthing out and setup than it did to paint the aquarium stand. The results are the best I've seen/used. Do yourself a favor and get a second or third cup. Yes, it makes cleaning everything up easier and faster. If you've been thinking about this, go ahead and pull the trigger. You won't be sorry!!!

I have a job where I have to lacquer hundreds of small boards 4" x 20". It's a bear with a brush. I researched a lot of sprayers but ran away from the cost. Then I found this one on sale and figured it couldn't be much, but if it would just put down the first coat, it would save a lot of time. Boy was I surprised. Spraying Magnalac semi-gloss straight out of the can, I was in full production mode in about 5 minutes. It lays down a beautiful finish. I've been using it for about three months now and I have had absolutely zero trouble. I have used it on everything from cabinets to small turned products with excellent results. I was hoping to get something that would be at least barely adequate! this turned out to be the buy of the decade.

I have gone thru 2 of them. Lousy shooting anything but lacguer. Lasts about a year each for me. I have been a cabinet maker and finisher for some 35 years. Tried everything. If you kinow weather content, temperatures and formula's you will do well. I had to tape all of my hoses back on to the fittings. Reason once the airflow heats upthe hose it tears from the fitting on both ends. So now I automatically Tape the new hose from the get go. I'll just buy a new one once a year they're so cheap and don't need a compressor.

I don't know how many of you have been burned because you bought the "economy model" of anything, but I have. Cheap and value are almost never synonymous. Against my better judgment, I dropped $100 on my Rockler HVLP sprayer, because I considered it the price of getting an education. In other words, I figured I would use this one for a while, then I'd go invest in something that really works. This sprayer dispels all myths that you must spend a lot of money to get something that performs. OK, it's made of plastic, and it looks as plain as vanilla pudding, but WOW does it do a great job laying down a finish!

I am presently doing my first job with this sprayer! one that involves finishing 3 4X8 panels of African mahogany. The mahogany project was also a first for me, and it didn't go particularly well....at first. Thankfully, a level head and a couple days of patience have produced a good outcome there.

Yesterday was the day of reckoning, and it was the first time for me to use my recently acquired Rockler HVLP System. After a few trial squirts on a piece of scrap, I made the Nestea plunge and started painting my first mahogany panel. I was done in less than 5 minutes, and the distribution of General Finishes Satin varnish was perfect. Clean up was done in another 5 minutes.

What else can I say? I feel this is the best bargain I've run across in a long, long time. Go buy one! You'll love it.

As a professional finisher with 42 years experience, I can vouch for this as a good unit for temp or occasional jobs, or as a portable back up for onsite problems. Be wary of leaks from the tip, the cup seal, and the needle - keep it adjusted just right. Meticulous maintenance/cleaning is imperative. Be absolutely sure of getting the cup and gun threads clean - very clean. Also the gasket that seals the cup inside the gun - keep it as spotless as possible. Once that finish dries, you have a problem. The cup is very slippery, and difficult to grasp/turn when stuck - ask me how I know! This an inexpensive combo that works quite well - but it does wear out. For convenience, I bought replacement cups at Rockler on sale.

This was a very good purchase since I learned that I really like working with HVLP. However, after 8 months of moderate use spraying shellac sealer, w/b polyurethane, and acrylic enamel, I guess I didn't keep the filter clean enough, and the motor burned out today in the middle of sealing 12 sashes. I called to see if I could buy a replacement motor, only to discover that there is a 1 year warranty and they would replace the unit. I was prepared to buy a better unit to replace it, but I will keep using this system and will be more careful keeping the filter clean. In fact, I'm going to build a cabinet in my finish room to hold the system, and will incorporate some pre-filters to help eliminate some of the fine over-spray dust particles that make it into the the system filter.

WOW! I wish I would have bought this sprayer years ago! This really stepped up my game. I used it today for the first time and I am extremely pleased at how well it laid down a water borne finish I was using on a small shaker hall bench. I used the small needle valve with the undiluted finish and it was perfect from the start. No runs, very minimal overspray and it took as long to clean the sprayer as it does to clean a brush. I used FAR less finish than I would have putting it on with a brush. GREAT PRODUCT! I would highly recommend it at this or ANY price!

This was my first HVLP sprayer. I bought it to get a piano finish on the bass I am working on in the picture. Until now I have been using spray cans of lacquer. Boy, am I glad I invested in the HVLP. The thing worked exactly as advertised.
At first I was having some problems with orange peel, but the guys at the Rockler store gave me some sudgestions on how to remedy the problem. I went home, did what they said, and BINGO laid down a smooth even coat of Vinyl Sealer, no runs, sags or voids.
Now I can start my next bass project. The time and money the system will save me is good as gold!

This is my first HVLP system. I sprayed several coats of poly onto an unstained pine mission table that I built and the results are very impressive. I am completely satisfied and do not plan to go back to a brush. I highly recommend at least one extra cup for clean up. The extra cups are translucent and have graduated markings for ease of measuring.

I have purchased Rockler products over the past 20 years and never been disappointed. I saw this unit on sale in February and after reading the reviews decided to buy it. I finally used it this week 5-05-2011. I work out in my garage and the Chicago weather has been really cold. During the winter I made an Adirondack chair and needed to stain it and seal it. This unit worked great! It is easy to use and clean up easy. I agree that the extra cup helps in the process. I sprayed on a stain and Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane finish. Excellent results. I have been woodworking for 30+ years and this unit is just what I need in my small shop. I would recommend it.

Wow! I had been using a brush to apply my polyurethene coats, and it took forever. This product worked as advertised right out of the box. You definitely want to purchase the additional containers. They are actually better because they are clear, and you can see the material level. It is also easier to use them to measure the dilution. Great product!

I bought this a few months ago and finally got around to using it today. I was a little apprehensive because of how inexpensive it was but after using it I am thoroughly impressed. It is easy to use, cleanup is a breeze but most importantly it laid down a very smooth, high quality finish waterbased varathane satin finishand overspray was not an issue. I bought a replacement cup when I purchased the sprayer and I'm glad I did. It makes cleanup alot easier and gives you a storage container for any mixed finish that can't go back into the can. For the price, you can't beat it.

Rockler branded products have been very good for the price from my experience. This is another one. Don't let the plastic construction fool you, for the money this little sprayer performs quite well. I have used it for homemade oak furniture with good success. I spray Polycrylic directly without any thinning and it has produced good results. The unit is easy to disassemble and clean, and if you buy a couple of extra media cups, you can save any left over material for future use in the same container. Media cups come with a lid. It comes with two size needle valves and a small wrench to dissemble it for cleaning. I have had better results with the smaller needle valve when using Polycrylic finish. I haven't tried outer finishes, so I can't comment on using with other finish materials. Overall, I have been very pleased with this product.

I ordered this for a project my wife and I were doing this winter. I was impressed at first when we used it for latex primer. Really saved some time. We had to sand because of orange peel finish. We purchased a good quality latex paint to finish this project. Just could not get the paint to lay down smoothly. Tried more thinning but no use, I purchased an additive Flotrol but still not the quality we wanted. Even tried the small nozzel with thinner mix but no change. While I was remixing etc. I went back and turned on the unit, no go! just would not turn on. I waited, thought it was an overheat. Had it on my bench, still would not start. I slammed it slightly on the workbench and it finally started. Did not try it again because it was too much trouble. Was disappointed and it really seemed like a nice unit and a fair price. There must be some quality issue where some units have different nozzels or more or less pressure etc because more great reviews than bad. I packaged it up and sent it back for a refund. Wish I could have been a delighted user!

Awesome little unit. I had 23 interior doors and some 500 feet of baseboard to stain and urethane. I used a water based urethane zipguard satin right out of the can. I tested it out on the baseboard 30 minutes for the first 200 feet. For the doors I made a jig so I could spray them horizontally and move them to hang on a rack to dry. I stained all 23 doors in about 3 hours. Huge time saver...urethane takes a bit more time and touch but little sanding if any between coats.
Best 100 bucks I've spent on a tool. I looked at higher priced models $700++ those might be good for the pros who use them every day but for light duty you can't go wrong.

Never having used a spray system of any kind before I bought this product with my fingers crossed. I was not disappointed. I am using it on a deck that has so many warped boards I am unable to use a roller to stain it. I am in the middle of the job (the noon day heat drove me back inside)and I am very happy with the equipment. I am putting on a high quality latex solid stain. I thinned it a bit with some water and the sprayer is doing a great job. I learned that I had to do a better job masking off what I didn't want painted, but other than that I have no complaints. The second cup is a great idea. I cleaned the system while waiting for the sun to go down a bit and it only took a minute to blow out the gun using a little soapy water and rinsing that with plain water. I'll be very interested to see how it works with a furniture finish, but based on this experience it should work fine.

Great little system. Not too loud. Easy to maintain. Easy to make adjustments. No need to be an expert. I do recommend you get an extra spray cup so you can use one for the paint and one for the clean-up solution. Don't even think twice if you've always wanted a beautiful spray finish.

I bought this sprayer in the spring of 2007. I only use it to apply the clear.(I still don't trust myself to apply the stain with it.)I have applied finish to 427 pieces of furniture over the past three years with great success. I treat mine like crap and only once has it failed me. (My wife went into labor mid project and it sat full of poly for 3 weeks.) The staff at Rockler were able to sell me the parts I needed to replace and I have not had a problem since. Quality product at an entry level price.

Amazing finish and easy to use. Just received and test inmediatly with some Kitchen cabinet doors, very impressed with the performance and smooth finish, I tried Chocolate lacquer with excellent results, tomorrow will try with polyurethane to complete the job. Cleaning was easy and quick, I got a replacement cup (very recommendable) to help the system cleaning, and I got it on sale, it cannot be better.

I discovered some time ago that spraying stain on frame and panel doors resulted in more even distribution of color. I've used my regular air compressor with an automotive type sprayer to do this in the past but the stain ended up on everything else as well as the doors. A professional antique refinisher suggested the HVLP Rockler sprayer for its low price and good results spraying both shellac and stain. He was absolutely right. It works very well and there is much, much less overspray.

I rated this product excellent, but it did have a couple of small flaws. When spraying, sometimes the air hose disconnects from the spray gun easily, and the instructions were a bit lacking. Maybe add a hints and tips booklet on spraying different finishes with this unit. Other than that, I bought it to spray a number of projects and so far it works great. Sprayed three bookcases with a clear polycrylic finish in twenty minutes a coat. Would have taken me at least two hours a coat brushing.

Very impressed. I needed to spray latex paint on something for protection, not really concerned about quality. I used some old paint (probably shouldn't have) and didn't filter it (probably should have). I diluted the paint and started spraying. It sputtered occasionally when it ran into a paint clump, and I only had to stop once to clean out a rather large piece of paint skin. After that, I switched to some new paint, diluted it a bit and it went on smooth as silk. I can't wait to try it on finer finishes.

I received this unit as a 2009 Christmas gift. I've used it a number of times to spray both stain and poly. It only took a few minutes for me to get the feel for it and I've never really sprayed much before. It wasn't too loud. I'd like the hose to be a little more flexible, but that's a minor complaint. Cleanup was easy between coats using a second cup filled with soap and water. I can definitely recommend this sprayer.

Bought the unit in December but did not use until late February. Never used a sprayer before but it only took a few minutes to get the hang of it. Sprayed a dye stain and 5 coats of clear finish on a rocking horse and got excellent results. Buy the extra cup. Made it very easy to clean the unit and keep the product stored between applications. Well worth the price.

I bought this unit when it went on sale last July. It sat on my shelf for about 3 months before I had a project I could use it on. I used this unit to spray pre cat lacquer on a bedroom set. It worked great after I cut the lacquer about 10% with thinner. I used it on a couple of small shelves and then the night stands and television stand. during the final coats on these, I noticed a faint smell of what would be hot electrical. I immediately shut everything down and cleared the area. I pulled off the filter and turned the unit on. I noticed a lot of sparking around the turbine. Rockler was gracious enough to send me another unit. I like the unit, it does spray a nice flat coating, but I definitely am leery of using this with pre catalyzed lacquers. Any input would be greatly appreciated-Chris

I had this on my Rockler wish list and My Son, Daughter in law & grandsons got this for me at Christmas 2009. I finely got it out to put Polyurethane on a microwave cabinet. It worked great. (I am the world's worst spray painter) but this system made it so easy compared to the Wagner Electric Spray system. Clean Up is a breeze. The noise was a lot less then the Wagner. I had no runs. Yes I recommend this system to anyone. Adjustment is so easy to get the perfect spray with very little over spray.

I gave it 5 stars in relation to what I spent on this unit. I work in a $30000 spray booth. This little gun spits product like a bandit! I know for the pure of heart it is not, but I am telling you for the price this gun is money well spent. I have sprayed 4 dining room tables and two cocktail tables and a host of miscellaneous projects. I love this unit. I used it with all kinds of product including brush on lacquer! Again keep the price in mind!

Motor burnt out after 20 minutes. Project has to wait until I get a replacement. Will send back. Maybe, it was just a lemon. Would love for it to work. Was only spraying water based Poly.

Editor's note: What happened here is the safety breaker in the turbine tripped to prevent the unit from overheating. When the unit cools down it resets itself. Causes for possible overheating can be operating in warm temperatures or clogged filter.

I just purchased this unit a couple of weeks ago to finish cabinets I made for my son's home. It is an excellent value, gives you a professional finish and is super easy to clean up. The one knock it has are the included instructions. They are very basic and leave alot to chance for a novice. There is however a significant amount of info regarding HVLP equipment and and it use on the net.

I bought this a few months ago and finally used it this past weekend. I sprayed Sherwin-Williams Pre-Cat Lacquer over an aniline-dyed beech table and chair set for my son. Per the instructions, I thinned 2:1 with lacquer thinner and used the smaller 0.9mm tip. The material went on nicely and I didn't have to make any adjustments to my set-up from my test piece to the real thing.

There is some amount of eye-work required as you have to make sure you're putting enough material for it to "flow", but not too much that it runs. Good lighting helps a bunch. Applying one coat of lacquer took about 20 minutes for the whole project (2'x3' table and 2 small chairs) and it dried in 30min - 1 hour. A light sanding after the first coat was all it took to get a nice smooth finish.

I would recommend this for an inexpensive unit to get into spraying.

Going on 3 mths of owning the sprayer, and so far used it on a dozen or more projects. I really hate finishing projects, getting a sprayer was very intimating for me. I decided to get this one based on the reviews and the price, thinking I would upgrade later on to a better more expensive sprayer. Usually the rule of thumb with power tools is you get what you pay for. Well with this product I got more then I payed for. With care I can see this unit lasting a long time..and at the price..well..for once..I feel like I scored. Yeh the instructions were minimal. But common sense makes up the rest. Nothing to it. Its cut down on my finishing times by days, couldn't be happier with a product

I borrowed this from a friend to stain a shadow box fence. My first time using a sprayer. I was concerned about having to spend too much time tweaking the flow to get an even coat. No worries straight for the can and just turn the knob until it sprayed evenly. My other concern was clean-up and it was a breeze. I just ordered my own.

This is my first HVLP system and I'm not disappointed. Good finishes, right from the start. Once I figured out the proper fluid adjustment it was smooth sailing. It works well and is fairly straight-forward to use. The instructions, as many others have pointed out, are minimal at best. A more thorough manual sure would be nice for fine tuning and giving more than a common-sense understanding of the system. Be prepared - the thing howls louder than my shop-vac! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this system to a friend.

Having limited experience using an HVLP sys, I was surprised how well it (I) did recently. Using a water-based primer followed by a latex interior semi-gloss finish, a respectable job was delivered. It was kind of fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants in that the instruction pages were not very instructional. But, having said that, I, with some practice, was able adjust my process (thinning with H2O, adding flotrol) to acheive a satisfactory finish. Albeit, with the percent thinning required, I lost much of the semi-gloss luster. The second job I did that required poly was a higher quality finish. The system cleaned easily & performed fine - just be careful what product you are shooting. For the price-point, I am happy to have this option in my shop.

I don't usually write reviews for products that I purchase but I am making an exception in this case. I'm a serious woodworker but consider myself an amateur when it comes to finishing projects. I just purchased the Rockler HVLP spray system last week from the store in Maplewood, MN. Great store by the way. The project I had to finish had large birch plywood panels as well as a number (50+) small pieces. I sprayed two light coats of shellac right out of the can and in my opinion got professional results on the first try. I always used spray cans for fine finishing on my projects before but I can kiss the spray cans good-bye now. I you want an operators manual to read in your spare time save it. This sprayer comes with minial instructions and all it takes is a little common sense and you'll be spraying professionally in minutes. As the salesman who sold it to me said. "It's a very forgiving sprayer" he was right and I'm a happy customer. Thanks much.

Great spray system! Simple setup and easy cleaning, very low overspray with proper adjustment of the volume screw. Just finished two eight feet long base cabinets with twelve drawers and eight doors. Used a sanding sealer and then a polyurethane varnish. Sprayed the sealer straight out of the can. I thinned the varnish 3:1 due to cooler wheather. The time saved has already paid for the HVLP Spray System. Very happy with the finish. Thanks Rockler.

Wow...that was easy! As an increasingly serious woodworking hobbiest, my last two cabinet projects made me realize that I needed an easier way to apply the finish. My ususal washcoat/colorcoat/topcoat method was becoming a daunting (and inconsistent) task when done by hand on large projects. So...I began researching spray finishing and decided that a compact turbine system would best suit my current lack of workspace. Based on many positive reviews, I purchased the Rockler HVLP system and used it to spray my recently completed workbench with shellac and polyurethane. The system is simple and easy to use. As a newbie to spray finishing, I was extremely pleased with the results and am anxious to use it on future projects. Clean up is a snap. If you are contemplating the spray finishing plunge, you can't go wrong with set up. I just wish I had made the decision to purchase this spray system before I completed all those cabinets!!! ;o)

Bought this as my first HVLP to "Test the waters" and learn. Other than the odd "rattle can" here and there along the way I have never sprayed a finish in my life. I have been all rags and brushes up till now. I purchased an old curved glass curio some months back and have been repairing all the woodworking and when it came time for it's finish I went for this option as Shellac was the original finish and this is a moderately sized piece, so I felt it should be sprayed. I dissolved the shellac while waiting for delivery from Rockler and when it came I opened the box read the instructions, practiced on a scrap for about 15 minutes and applied the smoothest, fault free finish I have ever managed! SWEET!!!!! Cleanup is easy and you will find that the extra cup is a worthwhile purchase. The only complaint I have right now is that the hose at the gun end absolutely will not stay attached with just the friction fit no matter how hard you push and twist it in there (two wraps of blue painters tape cured that) it really should have the same twist lock feature the other end has. Also the unit should have an additional foam filter, it would sure help with cleanup. For the price you just can't go wrong here!

Bought this sprayer a year ago on sale. Sat in the box until today. I bought a large sprayer that does HVLP as well so I have been using it. Wanted to prime some shoe cabinets and didn't feel like cleaning the large sprayer. Used this to prime and it worked great. A little thinning was needed and I will have to play with the viscosity a little to get it perfect next time. Don't have much experience with thinning or spraying. I would definitely use this instead of the large sprayer due to easy cleanup. Just wish the instructions were a little clearer on thinning the material.

This was the first time any of us used a New Yankee Workshop plan. It was satisfying to see how the project turned out. For my table, I used soft maple with birch plywood. The table is finished with an antique cherry stain coated with satin poly-acrylic clear coat applied with the Rockler HVLP sprayer. I used General Finish brand stain and poly-acrylic both from Rockler. For the playing surface I used blue velveteen.

I've sprayed a bit over two gallons of water-based poly on multiple projects with this gun, including 16 cabinet doors and a half-dozen passage doors. For my purposes it works quite well, is easy to operation, and cleans up quickly. I'll try spraying something more finicky at some point, but for water-based finishes like I'm using it's fast, simple, and yields a quite reasonable finish. At the (frequent) sale price it's a bargain to be sure.

At $99 and all the positive reviews, I thought how bad could it be? I knew as soon as I opened the box I made a mistake. Sorry to say that, but I did get what I paid for. All the plastic screamed cheap. The hose a low end, non flexing plastic hose that doesn't attach snug, so the little air that is produced from the unit, a lot of it just leaks out. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but there was little or no technical info included to say whether that the loose hose fit was by design or not. Anyhow, filled it with some waterbased sanding sealer, and the flow and spray output was totally lame. It felt like a toy. And more importantly, worked like one. A $99 toy. Never used it again. In fact I through it in the dumpster instead of sending it back. I hate writing a negative review, but I just had to. Sorry.

Editor's note: Air movement at hose fitting is by design to prevent turbine from over heating. Rockler offers a 90 day return policy. If for any reason you are not satisfied with the merchandise purchased, it can be returned within 90 days to receive a refund.

As a professional cabinet maker, I was pretty skeptical about this paint system. It cost 1/2 of what I paid for just a gun for my compressor system. Well I was wrong. This is a great tool at a fantastic price. I spayed latex primer and then a high end high gloss latex paint and the results were excellent. You do need to thin the paints until they are pretty runny. Flotrol and water combine to make a solution that sprays and lays down well. The results were comparable to my HVLP compressor system with far less noise and much better portability.

I have read through the reviews at Rockler and other sites. I have spoken to professional and looked in all the home centers around where I live my choice was Rockler unit. The cost of all the high priced hvlp sprayers just could not justify. Having just sprayed out a latex primer sealer from Sherwin Williams with varied results. Thinning seems to be the answer. Technique will be refined as I use it more. Clean up must be done quickly after finished. Be sure to check the filter and clean also. Given time and preparation project can be done with good results. I gladly recommend the unit for people with budget and patience. The unit could do with clearer instructions, a extra filter would be appreciated so not to have to wait for only one to dry before using again. I believe the unit will is good for the money.

Bought this for a large built-in project over Christmas and have no regrets. I was quite surprised by the relatively high build quality of the turbine and gun for the price.
I used it to spray shellac as a sealer and it did marvelously--2 lb cut straight from the can with very little adjustment.
My experience with Lacquer wasn't nearly so good. Granted this was my first go at spraying lacquer, but I couldn't get good atomization. To not get orange peel I ended up thinning the lacquer to almost 1:1. This could be "normal" for HVLP, but the can said it should require no thinning.
Anyway, overall I am very pleased the time savings on this one project alone justified the price for me.

If you've never sprayed, but thinking about it, Buy this sprayer. I looked and looked and did tons of research. The more I learned the more intimidating it seemed. I decided to take the inexpensive route and try this HVLP system. I sprayed Oil based Enamel on a bookcase I recently built and it came out great. Cleanup wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Well worth the money. Only real problem is that that the hose doesn't lock into the gun and I can see it becoming loose with a lot of use.

I'm very happy with the sprayer. I was nervous at first, since I had never used an HVLP system before. Also, I was planning to use it for water-based poly, and almost everything I'd read indicated that these systems, particularly less expensive ones, have a very hard time atomizing water-based products. But between the sale price, a free shipping promotion, and the many positive reviews here, I decided to go ahead and give it a try. My project included 32 storage drawers, all of which needed some sort of finish on the boxes. I got the finish on a little heavy on the first couple of drawers but very quickly overcame the learning curve and became accustomed to the sprayer's characteristics. Everything went very smoothly from there. For those interested in specifics, I used the sprayer to apply Minwax Polycrylic to baltic birch plywood. I thinned the material with a tiny bit of distilled water, though I don't think it was absolutely necessary in order to spray well. I did two coats with a light sanding after each one. I don't think these will need a third coat. Cleanup was simple - spraying a cupful of water with a little bit of ammonia, followed by spraying another cupful of plain water. That seemed to be all it took keep things clean and flowing well. Everything else was cleaned up with a little soap and warm water. The only caution I would throw out there, and for all I know this may be common to all HVLP systems - there was a lot more overspray than I had anticipated. It was my impression that these systems were designed to make that less of a problem than with, for example, spray cans. Still I was surprised at the amount left in the air. Also, there was a little shipping damage on the unit I received - the part that attaches the hose to the main body of the turbine had cracked, but Rockler replaced that immediately. I just had to live with the disappointment of not being able to use the unit for a couple days after it came.

Good gun. Bought it on sale after doing a home project with spray cans. Never again. Takes a little bit to get use to if you never used one before. Once you get the hang of it you'll never brush again. Owners manual is poor at best but this is not brain surgery. Cover the hose with plastic and motor as far as possible from work area. Duct tape the hose ends so they won't come undone. Cover everything in the surrounding area and wear a hat.

I was not to impressed with the quality of the product. I returned a wagner as it said it would not shoot latex paints. The product came with a minimal instruction manual. There were items in a plastic bag which I apparently was supposed to know what they were for. My first spray came out to thick, after I thinned the paint it then came out to thin and ran. I finally scrapped the project. I do plan to try it again but some more detail in the owners manual would help. I am a weekend wood worker and not a professional but I guess I expected more.

I've always been intimidated by spray systems, opting to use hand held paintbrushes for decades. The idea of thinning and mixing paint for a sprayer would send my mind into a fetal position, even though my results with a brush could never approach a spray finish.
The spray mechanisms seemed complicated even though I'm comfortable with the normal tools in a home shop. Table saws, nailers, routers... no fear there.
So I was encouraged to buy this as my first spray system, mostly as a result of the product reviews here on the Rockler site. I'm a complete novice at spraying, so any benefits from a more expensive system would be lost on me. I reasoned that the price for this system, along with the favorable comments, made it the ideal choice for my self education.
I've had the unit for 3 weeks and sprayed interor latex with it 4 times. The unit does not have many parts, so it's easy to understand, although there is one short section of flexible tubing about 2" in diameter and 3" long which I think might have been mistakenly packed in the box. (I haven't figured out a use for it, and it's not mentioned in the "manual")
My results have been very good, for a beginner. Much better than I could do by hand, and I see improvement every time I use the sprayer. I still have a lot to learn about thinning finishes to get a workable viscosity, and on the process of choosing which needle to use, but I'm making progress and very satisfied with this purchase.
The product reviews here were more helpful than the product manual. I'll be looking for a basic instruction book to guide me on various finish options using HVLP systems.

Editor's note: Our book #27806 will have a section on HVLP spraying.

Over the last year I have used this HVLP sprayer like crazy to spray oil-based polyurethane. Every piece of trim in my house, and all 12 six-panel solid core pine doors have been sprayed to a glass-smooth finish thanks to this handy piece of equipment.

I picked up a replacement cup a few months back, which helped significantly as I was thinning a particularly thick brand of polyurethane. The replacement cups have a metered gauge in ml.

Outstanding value on this tool. The only problem I have is that my filter is now clogging up. I've not decided if I'll try to order a replacement (info posted in another review) or if I'll just cut a piece of foam similar to the one that comes OEM.

Great buy. Highly satisfied.

Bought on sale in December, thought I could not go wrong for the sale price. I have never sprayed and hesitated at the price vs quality. This is a wonderful inexpensive tool. I need to practice a little more but it sure saves time. Took longer to cleanup than to spray my cabinet. Sprayed poly with the large needle but will try the smaller next time ... had some splatter even when adjusted to minimal material. Don't hesitate to but this tool.

I'd give it a "5" if the instruction manual was up to snuff. It took me awhile to figure it all out. In any case, I used it to spray a water-based lacquer on two guitars, and then changed the spray mechanism from fine to medium and sprayed an exterior latex paint with minimal thinning. The tool worked great. Here are some tips from me:
(1) use the right tip - medium for paints and rough work, fine for finish spraying of lacquer
(2) buy a second cup to use for easy and fast cleaning
(3) practice using the spray adjustment at the back of the gun until you get the right amount of material
(4) if you are going to spray many coats (as I did with the lacquer), you should be able to leave the material in the cup - but clean the tip with a small brush (or your fingernail!)
(5) after using heavier material, take the tool apart to clean it.
(6) if you are having "sputtering", make sure you have enough material in the cup, and that the plastic tube that extends into the cup is facing front.
Well worth the price - wish I'd bought one before.

Great little spray system for small jobs and you can't beat the price. I found it to have almost zero over-spray with easy adjustment to get the correct amount of paint, polyurethane, stain etc. on the project with a simple turn of the adjustment screw.
The only down side I found was that where the air hose attaches to the spray gun doesn't lock into position like it does on the compressor end and occasionally it will detach for the gun.

At first this seemed like at great deal. However after several month of use it have become useless.
Problems: No replacement parts. After several month of takeing it apart and cleaning it the o-ring in the gun has worn out and cannot find on to fit.
The hose friction fit is now taped together as it slips off.
The filter is gone. Replaced with a homemade filter box that sits over the assembly.
Many of these problems my be that I use the system hard and for largerer peices. Since I purchased it I have sprayed: 6 dining room chairs, 2 dressers, 1 large mirror frame 4 bed frames, 3 end tables, 5 kids rockers, 1 coffee table, 1 kids chair and a few odd ball items. As you can see this system has put out alot of use for it gave up. So, For the person who only uses it once in awhile it will be a good gun( better if they offerd parts).

Excellent little paint sprayer for the money. It is easy to set up and use. The addition of another container allows for paint storage and easy sprayer clean up. Further the air hose without paint sprayer doubles as a passable blower to remove saw dust. Your paint usage will increase, but your time painting will decrease.

I read all the customer reviews and still had a feeling this was going to be a waste of money, but after a few minutes practice and a call or two to tech support, I was spraying virtually flawless finishes using waterborne poly right out of the can. It would probably rate a "5" for value and performance if the unit had a real instruction manual and didn't have a few minor quirks, like the small needle sometimes hanging up when you stop spraying and not completely shutting off the flow. Releasing the trigger smartly takes care of that problem though. I've used HVLP sprayers before so I suppose that gives me an edge over a first time user, but it's not too hard to learn. A good book on spray finishing and a wet film thickness gauge would be a good investment for anyone new to spray finishing. You might consider ordering replacement filters, cup and tip gaskets and maybe even a spare needle and tip since the replacement parts are inexpensive and most cost less than the shipping charges you'd pay if you ordered them later. And don't forget to order at least one extra cup to make cleanup between coats easier.

Definitely want to get some extra cups, although the first time I used this sprayer, I used way more primer than I was thinking I would. The instructions are very vague and leave almost as many questions as answers. For instance, on thinning paint, the instructions are, with using the viscosity cup, that drain time is from 8 to 20 seconds. Seems like quite a range. I had about 17 seconds and got a somewhat textured finish. It being primer I can sand it down a bit. I was hoping for more detail in preparing the finish.

This is a surprisingly good gun for the money. It's my first hvlp, but I do have a bit of auto body background and have a sense of what a decent finish looks like and how to keep a wet edge when spraying. So far I've sprayed oil-based primer, shellac-based primer and sealcoat, latex paint, and water-based lacquer (with this gun the lacqer gives a really nice finish even before any rubbing out is done ). Latex is the most difficult paint for ANY gun to atomize and it requires what I would consider the limit of thinning and conditioning in order to get decent atomization with this particular gun, in order to use the fine tip. Up to 20% conditioner plus 10-15% water works for what I'm doing, several coats. This combination does mess with the sheen of the paint but is ok when a clearcoat is laid down on top. After top coat and rub-out the final result is quite nice.
The gun is easily cleaned for shellacs and water-based finishes - I keep a half-pail of ammonia/water handy, and I dip one of the "HVLP replacement" cups in that. Finish spraying, turn unit off, detach hose, detach paint cup and set aside, now attach ammonia/water cup, reattach hose, turn back on and spray through for 30 secs. or so into another empty 5-gal bucket tipped sideways. Then shut it down again, take cup off, rinse everything out with clean water.
Done. Bottom line, a good tool for what it is designed to be - a weekend warrior machine. If you have a little background in spraying you can get a lot of mileage out of this.

Great sprayer especially at the sale price I picked it up for.
Sprayed primer and finish alkyd paint on some bare bookcases I built. Coverage was excellent and cleanup was relatively quick.
The manual is almost useless. There are no instructions on what to disassemble to clean the unit. Buy yourself some piper cleaners and a brass tube cleaning brush, so you have it handy to use.
I prefer gravity fed but this cup is not so large that it gets in the way but remember to buy an extra cup.
This unit paired with a good finishing book, is perfect/essential for the part-time home woodworker. (5 stars if the manual was more comprehensive)

I've used this now for a weekend spraying water based polyurthane which went good. That is, after I realized the extra needle packed with the unit was a smaller spray head, and that using the needle loaded into the sprayer even at lowest setting was causing problems. Overall, a very good unit, which works reliably. The blower unit sounds like a shop vac, but you get used to it. Finish quality (with the right needle!) is very good with nice coverage.
Recommendation for purchasers -- buy at least one extra cup when you buy the unit! This way, you can swap out the spare cup with water to wash the unit out, and keep your finish capped for second and third coats.
I'd give this unit five stars were it not for the direction manual, otherwise a very good unit!

Reading the reviews was what sold me on this sprayer, so I'll chime in as well. While the price shows in many areas - lots of plastic parts, for example - the money was spent where it counts - performance. The core working parts (needle, etc.) are brass. Controls are kept minimal and simple, but that's fine with me, a newbie when it comes to spray finishing. My first job with the HVLP was applying Spar varnish to the Adirondack chair in the picture. Having varnished the matching footstool using a brush, I knew there had to be a better way, and there was - this spray kit. Far less time spent, and considerably better results. Sweet! One note on customer service. When I received the unit the 15' hose had a small tear at one end, causing an air leak. I used the sprayer anyway, and it did fine. I reported it to Rockler customer support, and they shipped a replacement hose immediately. Gotta appreciate that!

I too was a little leary of such an inexpensive system. But after a few uses I am very happy. Yes, the manual is slim, very slim, it doesn't even talk about the different sized needles or why you would switch. But for a first time system, it was easy to learn and easy to use.
I sprayed satin polyurethane out of the can no probs. Nice smooth finish without orange peel or runs.
I also sprayed thorugh 3 cans of lacquer, glossy and satin,(see photo). Using the included measuring viscosity cup, I thinned the lacquer 3:1- it took 8 seconds to run through the cup. It produced some cotton blush, so I had to thin it out 2:1. This may have been from a poor quality solvent, I don't know- but I had to thin it out more than the viscosity cup indicated. The lacquer came out perfectly smooth and was easy to apply once properly thinned.
The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because almost the entire thing is made from plastic, and I'm not real sure how easy replacement parts (if needed) will be. You also can't adjust the width of the spray pattern- just the orientation and the volume.
But for a first HVLP system, no complaints. Way better finish than I was ever able to brush or wipe on. I'm thrilled with it and can't wait for the weather to warm back up so I can spray some more (I don't like spraying large projects in my small shop if I can help it.)
Be sure to practice on some cardboard before you move to your project.

After reading the reviews I decided to buy this sprayer. I had reviewed the prices of other units, knowing that usually it doesn't pay to buy lower cost units. I had been cautioned that many HVLP units won't handle water based paint, but the reviews said this one would, and I could afford it. I really needed a spray gun, as I have 11 plantation shutters to build. So far only one is made. I tried to paint the parts before assembly by brushing. This was a real pain and a huge time consumer. The shutter needed another coat to cover the brushing and to reach the corners left bare to facillitate gluing.

I was very pleasantly surprised that the covering (spraying) only took minutes. Having never used a sprayer before, I was a little nervous. I closed the needle gently and opened it about one half turn - found the spray a little light so opened the valve another quarter turn and went to work. In a minute or two, I was done with the first side!

My only complaint is: The fun of using this spray gun didn't last long enough! It took longer to clean up the gun than to spray this shutter. The clean up was easy, however with water and a little soap. To do the job completey I sprayed the shutter 3 seperate times (allowing for drying) and cleaned the gun 3 times. Excellent coverage with no drips! Total time? An afternoon. The only overspray was on the drop cloth behind the shutter.

The parts of this gun are very well designed, simple to understand and operate smoothly.

Using this gun is dynamite! TNT! (Taint Nothing To it!) Thanks Rockler for offering this unit! And thanks to all the users who gave reviews! I'll certainly recommend it to anyone needing a HVLP sprayer. I don't know that anyone could get more value from an HVLP that cost 3 or 4 times more.

The blower unit is compact, light weight and well designed. The power switch is placed in a handy place. Even has a built in storage spot for the gun. An extra needle valve and a small wrench are also included.

Most likely, all of my future stain and finish will be applied with this unit.

If you are spray-painting a model car or some such, please borrow my unit for that. If anything larger, you'll need to allow lots of time, because it sprays at a very sparse rate and seems to stop for breath every 3-5 seconds--no flow for a bit then it resumes; stops/resumes and on and on, like somebody climbing Everest.
I have cleaned, recleaned, adjusted, readjusted all the parts and tried all possible combinations of spray tips and needle valves in an effort to get better results. I have thinned then thinned some more and strained the paint to filter out any small cloggers. No improvement--took an hour yesterday just to spray a normal-sized cabinet. One coat!
Did I get a different animal than the one so many others praise here? (By the way, I am NOT an untutored painter.)

I bought it to spray stain. There is to much air and I have to have the needle all but off to spray and then it is spotty or way to much stain when opened a little.
maybe I would get better results if I stood 10 feet away. I have not tried the other nozzle. I would expect a bigger nozzle and the instructions don't mention it and are poor at least.

I read the reviews before buying this so, I was expecting the owners manual to be bad. It was worse than I expected, but the machine is fairly easy to use. I stained a bed with turned spindles using a brush and took about 3 hours to get it all covered. The HVLP sprayer was used to spray poly straight out of the can. Each coat took only about 15 minutes to apply, the coverage was good and it was easy to control the amount applied. I had fewer runs than with a brush. It was much easier to clean the equipment than with a conventional sprayer.
This is the only HVLP sprayer I have used so I don't have anything to compare it to....It worked as advertised and did a good job.

For the price, this spray gun performed very well. I used this unit to spray water based polyurethane straight from the can. The unit was very simple to operate and very easy to clean. The instructions indicate the unit should only be cleaned with "cleaner solvent" and not mineral spirits, but does not state exactly what the "cleaner solvent" is. With a water based product, I had no problem with cleaning with soap and warm water.

Editor's note: cleaning can be done with the appropriate solvent for whatever is being sprayed. However, they should be cleaned right away after one is finished spraying and parts should not be left to soak in solvent for long periods such as overnight.
Cleaning of plastic compressor housing should be done with soap and water rather than mineral spirits or other solvents.

Only giving 1 star because the unit I had did NOT come with a manual. After downloading it from the website and printing it, I realized that it was pretty much a waste of time becuase the manual wasn't of any value. The worst part of the experience though was when using it. I had both ear and dust protection on. I noticed about 5 minutes into it that the noise coming from the unit lowered for a brief moment. Then shortly thereafter completely stopped. After removing the dust protection (which I couldn't smell anything when on) I could smell a real bad burning smell. I walk over to the unit and it is smoking. After waiting a few minutes, I remove the case to take a look at the motor and I was able to turn it back on for a split second and major sparks were coming out of it. Back to the store you go. I don't know if this unit was a refurb or not (since no manual was present), but this one was a piece of garbage. I exchanged it for another to give it another shot - at least Rockler was good about the exchange.

I recently made plantation shutters for 5 large windows and used this spray system to finish them off with oil based lacquer. The resulting product was very professional looking. The plastic hose connection to the spray gun had to be re-done a few times, as the hose split right at the thread start. This is the only drawback to the system that I experienced. The product arrived promptly as usual. I gave it a test run using plain water and everything seems to be in good order. The manual is severely lacking and the hose connection to the turbine appears to be loose but the system works just fine. Obviously the loose fit is by design. This should be mentioned in the manual. I would suggest that the cup sold with the system be translucent like the replacement cups I ordered. The black cup sold with the unit does not allow you to see how much paint is left in the cup while spraying.

I bought this sprayer and attempted to spray latex paint on new poplar cabinet doors. It didn't work out so well, but I believe this is because I didn't add Flotrol to the mix. I did thin it with water but it was no good I believe due too user error. I will spray clear poly with it soon on a mission tv stand and I hope it works as well for me as everyone else.

I just sprayed waterbased poly and am not to impressed. I switched out the needles for the smaller one and tweeked to flow adjustment up and down. The atomization just isnt there and the machine produced a slightly bumpy finish. I hope light sanding will fix this problem. Im completly new to spraying but I can tell this gun is very limited. Not a complete waste but I would not recomend this if your trying to make a living. Better for a part time hobbiest. And just to beat a dead horse the instructions suck and mention absolutely nothing about switching out the needles for different finishes. I'll see if I can get better results in the future.

This sprayer works very well for its price range. I used it with undiluted clear Spar Polyurethane with excellent results. Contrary to what the overly brief instruction manual says, the smaller tip should be used for polyurethane leaving the factory installed one for latex materials. Minwax Polyshade does not spray as nicely but I attribute this fact to the material´s surface tension and not the sprayer. I wish that the air hose fitted better, to minimize air leaks, and did not fall off as easily from the gun but this is a minor concern. The instructions manual definitely needs help and corrections to be useful to inexperienced users.

Now I have to listen to my wife tell me: "you get what you pay for". Aside from the very cheap quality and lack of useful info in the manual. I used both tips, called up tech supt. They get 5 stars!
Product used is Kilz lo-voc primer, Sherwin Williams Flo X-tender and water to prime interior doors. If you like the 50's 'fleck' spay job it's great. But I never got close to anything that resembled a decent even coat. All my cardboard samples had flecks and neither tip helped. Used cup and counted to ten and the first break was around 10 to 12 or so. Very disappointed after reading about 20 or so rave reviews. Guess rookies like me need local help. As a DIY'r most challenges are what makes DIY enjoyable. This was a loss of vacation time thus had to quit and go back to brushes.

I bought this sprayer because of the good reviews, but was extremely disappointed with the results. I am very surprised at the positive reviews. It may be good for spraying water on plant leaves, that is about it.

I tried this with latex paint which produced an orange peel finish. Even with thinning the paint would not lay down. The big issue is the hose will not stay attached to the sprayer unit...it kept coming off. This must be a quality issue with the unit. I need to bring this unit back as I only used it once and very disapointed.

Just received my sprayer. Right out of the box, I find no issues except I didn't receive any instructions. Nothing. Paying $100 approx...no instruction manual...come on Rockler...you're better than that.

Editor's note: Sorry we messed up on this Fred. You'll find a copy of the manual linked in the left hand side bar of this web page.

Purchased a few months ago...did not handle primer very well...in order to get a functional consistency, I had to thin far beyond mfr recommendation. Orange peel effect was present, not matter what I did. In addition, the hose does not lock into the unit and continued to blow off. Overall I give the unit a 'fair' rating. I will try it again on the next project where my patience may prove a little more accepting.

I  thought this would be a great way to get rid of using brushes. I used it once to paint a door and it took numerous adjustments just to get it to look decent. Lots of splatter. On the second use I was using thinned latex paint on six 12' pieces of trim. Should have only taken a few minutes to complete but that would require the unit to work. The unit started smoking about three minutes into use and is now completely burned up. Total time used - maybe 20 minutes. Amazing how the same unit can have such varying reviews....either it works and you love it or it has lots of splatter and burns up.

I bought this approx two years ago thinking that it seemed like a good bet with some other good reviews and a good price. I had been spraying with a HVLP air gun on some earlier projects but my compressor died so I thought I'd give this a shot. I finally got around this summer to use it so I broke it out of the box and went to spray some cabinets. Spraying on the sanding sealer seemed to go ok and I kept it clean but was really disappointed when I went to put on the top coats. No matter how I played around with the thickness of the product, it was either spraying too dry or like cottage cheese. I cleaned and checked everything and did tests but finally gave up and borrowed a compressor and finished the job with my air gun. I suppose that this gun is ok for some projects but if you want a good smooth finish with minimal headaches all I can say is you get what you pay for.

I had the hardest time getting BM satin impervo to atomize correctly. I followed Jeff Jewitt's method of thinning and it still came out with large droplets. Used the tip and only turned the flow control, from off to, a quarter, then a half, then a full turn. No luck. Made sure to use the small tip. Thinned more than recommended by 5 more ounces of water! Still no go. This is the same exact paint that Jewitt used in his video and it came out wonderful in his gun. You cannot thin these paints too much. I went ahead and laid down 3 coats. Spray technique is down but you can see that the paint didn't atomize as it should. This is not good. I don't know what magic others are using to get the paint to come out perfect. Love to be enlightened though!

I am an experienced woodworker who builds furniture pieces for myself and friends, but I am a novice with spray guns. My previous spraying consisted of paint or poly in a disposable spray can. When I saw the economical price for this system, I finally decided to try a HVLP sprayer on a murphy bed I'm making. As with any piece of equipment, learning how to use is it the key to success. Like other reviewers I found the enclosed instruction sheet very basic and virtually no help for a novice wanting to learn the tips and tricks of applying spray finish. However, I found the Rockler Technical Support Department to be very patient and helpful in answering my questions and offering advice. That, combined with a couple internet articles I found on HVLP troubleshooting had me applying a nice finish in no time. This is not a professional system, but for the average woodworker it does as nice or better than using a brush to apply finish. Again, the key is to understand the unit and practice on scrap to learn the best method for your product and your temperment in applying. You can't just take it out of the box, plug it, and use it on your finished project unless you have had previous experience with sprayers. The only reason I can't give five stars is due to the very basic instruction sheet that could go a long way towards helping novices with a little more "here's how to spray 101" info.

I'm not typically a reviewer but had to on this one. I went through two of these, neither of which accumulated much usage time. The motor must be of exceptionally poor quality because both were cooked. Obviously keeping a clean filter and not impeding air to the unit as one would do with any tool. I did get some spraying out of them though. And on a positive note the unit does perform well. I would comment on how surprised I am at its performance based on its price however I would be neglecting the fact that it almost melted. I won't buy another. Put in a better motor and I'd consider it.

After a couple of uses the cup will screw onto the gun but it turns very hard.

I have both a regular full-size sprayer as well as a HVLP touch up size, and have sprayed many projects over the years. Bought this to have a full-size HVLP so I could reduce overspray. It worked just fine for 4 or 5 projects, then in the middle of spraying a cabinet with lacquer, the motor overheated and burned out. Have rigged the hose to the compressor and use 20 psi and it works again.

I attempted to use this HVLP gun and found that in an effort to get it to spray I had to dilute the primer almost 50%. A dilution rate of this magnitude affects the adhesion as well as the coverage. I attempted another material and again I had to dilute it to almost a 50% dilution rate. Needless to say I would never recommend the purchase of this gun or system. I have used other HVLP guns so this was not the case of an inexperienced person. This unit is a complete waste of money.

Seemed almost too good to be true for the price. Original unit looked like it was tossed out of a truck, but Rockler sent me a new one with a free return label for the busted unit, no questions asked. The 2nd one worked great the first day. No issues with the hose staying in like some other users mentioned, although it wouldn't surprise me, based on the interference-fit design. Used water-based poly, and was real pleased with the results. Recommended coverage is 3 coats with that stuff, but you could get by with 2. Cleanup was easy. On the 2nd day, I was half way thru spraying some shelves, and the turbine went up in smoke, literally. Bearings were totally siezed. I see there are a couple of other reports of that. Rockler has offered to refund my purchase - I just need to call them back with the S/N. Customer service has been great, but unit quality is a little sketchy. If you get a good one, you should be OK.
