I have had the 890 for a few years now in my router table and when I bought the CNC Shark Pro Plus HD Feb. 2012 I also got a free 892 Router with it. This router has been working very hard. I just had to replace the brushes in it, which were wore down to nubs. Other than that It has been a very good router. Now the 890 is in the Shark and the 892 is in the Router Table. Good Router.

I just bought another 892 router to use with the plunge holder that came with that came with the 893 set I purchased 3 years ago. The first one is in my router table attached to the table saw. They both work fine. I am using the plunge version with a Mortise Pal loose tennon jig that is a great help where bisquets are too big.

Great product! The soft start and variable speed are nice upgrades to the older P/C and the additional Hp is nice too. This is a powerful tool that does develop heat! if you enclose it in a table and don't provide adequate ventilation for it to keep cool, it will burn up.
The new dust extraction system for the fixed base is impressive. It carries away most of the dust and stops debris from being thrown up and out at you. Keep up the great work Porter Cable.
Advice to others who had problems: 1) Read the owners manual. 2) Keep the machine cool if enclosed in a table. 3) Don't buy cheap bits that break and fall into the housing.

I purchase the Porter Cable 892 Router package with the Rockler table top and the Lift FX. I have just made new raised panel doors and drawer fronts for our kitchen. The whole set up was a real neat package.

I have the 893pk it is also a lemon after 1 1/2 years of light use I have a piece of junk, that is not worth repairing. The armature is burned out, and speed control is also burned out. The cost of rebuilding is more than a router cost. I made a mistake buying another porter cable product. This my second second bad experience with porter cable and my last.

I have been very dissappointed with the Porter Cable 892 Router I bought a year ago. It is now dead sitting on my tool shelf. It is not a good router for a router table, as it is advertised, and proved to be a poor investment. First, a 1/4" router bit broke off, and fell in the router motor, shredding the cooling fan, requiring a certified repair place to fix it then. Then the height adjusmtment gear track came loose, as the small bolt that held it in place stripped its threads in the aluminum body of the router, making the adjustment difficult, and impossible from the above-the-table adjustment handle. Then the main bearing went out, causing smoke to bellow out of the router with horrible screeching sounds. Then, it just quit and some small metal parts fell out of it on the floor. Now it is dead. I have never worked this router hard, as it just couldn't take it, so I am sure that it was not my poor use, or overwork that caused the problems with this product. I think it was either a Lemon, or just a poorly designed product. I just bought an Hitachi to replace it, I hope it is better. I have never questioned P/C products before, but after this experience, I'm trying another brand name, I just hope that Hitachi is not also owned by the same conglomerate that owns P/C tools now.

After three years of regular use, my 890 died. The speed started fluctuating, and completely quit in the middle of an operation. I replaced the brushes ($25), but still, the speed fluctuates wildly. If the speed controller is the culprit, it's at least a $100 fix, which is not worth it (to me).

I purchased a model 892 variable speed router in April of this year. It's a lemon. The manual states it shouldn't be operated without a chip shield. There is none - Porter Cable doesn't make one for this model. Attempting to use it other than in a router table results in getting bombed with wood chips. This is a good way to lose an eye. Regardless of the speed of operation or rate of feed, it overheats badly. Also, the button operated collet lock periodically sticks. My Bosch model 1617 is only 1 3/4 hp, but works like a dream. I added an external speed control to it (purchased from Rockler)in order to handle larger bits.

I purchased the 895pk for my router table. My problem is without an after use cleaning, the height adjustment mechanism becomes jammed with debris. This is to the point were the motor cannot be removed from the base without extreme effort. Also if my fence is set I am unable to use the above-the-table adjustment knob. As a handheld unit the grip-vac handle for the fixed base and the hose attachment on the plunge base do a good chip removal. I prefer my 690 though, and I am looking for new table router.

This router only comes wtih a collet wrench, you are supposed to push a button to lock the shaft, there is no shaft wrench. So when your collet gets on really tight its just about impossible to loosen if one hand has to be used to press the button.

A few months ago I needed a new router, saw a good deal on the PC892 and, thinking that Porter Cable was a good name, I jumped on it. Unfortunately, I couldn't have been more disappointed with this tool. If there is anything that a router must have it is a flat base which keeps the bit at a right angle to the table. The base of the PC892 is a thin sheet of plastic that is screwed onto a cast metal base which is not machined. You are trusting the accuracy of a raw casting to keep your routing setup aligned! My router rocked back and forth on a flat surface like some kind of child's toy. The folks at my local Rockler were great about taking the router back and exchanging it for a new Bosch MRP23 router (highly recommended, the definition of what a router should be). The PC892 router is nothing more than a power toy without the accuracy or repeatability that defines a real tool. Steer clear!

I am a retired mechanical engineer, and used a Model 892 for hobby woodworking only. No production or daily usage. After six months, the shaft lock plunge button failed. Repaired under warranty with entire aluminum motor case replaced. During regular usage, the motor height adjustment binds up due to sawdust becoming lodged between the housing and motor. This should be cleaned out DAILY. At 18 months, the screws holding the height adjustment rack to the motor failed. Repair shop wants $120 to replace rack and case. Both of these failure modes are mentioned by other reviewers. Sounds like a design weakness to me. The repair center say the bearings are making noise and should be replaced. I bought this "Good" router thinking it would be my last. Now, after 18 months of hobby usage, I have to replace it.

Not very well constructed for the price paid. The shaft locking pin broke on the first use and hung up in the shaft. Very disappointing. If used upside down in a router table, the rack gear will have to be constantly cleaned in order to continue functioning. Poor design.

I like this router. After using a Bosch plunge which is a very good router but not in a table in my table I kept having trouble with the bit height drifting because the locking mechanism slips, so I bought the Porter cable. I havent had any motor problems with the 2 that I own yet but am now thinking about making a shield to protect the motor from debris after seeing a review here. One thing I would suggest is as soon as you get it remove the plastic base plate and use it for a template to make a new one out of solid material or buy one like the 1/4 inch plastic one sold on rockler. The base plate that comes with it flexes when on small areas like rounding over corners and bends allowing the bit to come down too far making a flaw in your work. Hard to explain but the base plate sucks poke it with your finger and it bends.

This router is not for a serious woodworker. I purchased it about a year ago, used it about 5 hours "on" time and it died. Got hot and a shoe from the armiture came off and trashed the brushes. Total loss!
This router proved to be a bad purchase for me, good luck with yours.
