I bought this package mostly for the hold downs. I assumed that the plastic dogs would be as good as plastic can be in this capacity. They held down a piece of wood that allowed me to do some surface planing on it. So they definitely performed as they should. As they are plastic, I will not put extreme pressures on them to ensure maximum life. The hold downs work very well. I used them to hold down a sharpening board and another board that I planed. No issues at all. My bench top is almost 2.5 inches and they grabbed well and released as they should. Overall, I gave these items a Very Good rating and I say they are a very good value also.

Great deal in these. Have had hold fasts in my home shop for years. Love 'em. bought 2 sets for the guys in in the shop where I work. Mats are always handy.

The hold-fasts are already in constant use. When I use them in conjunction with the non-skid mat, they're an excellent manual system to control a work piece while scraping, planing, sanding, etc. A really useful tool set at a really great sale price. I'm glad that I bought two!!

I know a lot of you see a rating of 3 and think this is junk. PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE MY RATING WITH POOR QUALITY! The product is exactly as I expected. Nothing more, nothing less.

Pros: Tenacious grip from the holdfasts, nice finish, secure low profile dogs, fair sized router mat, good price.

Cons: Bench dogs are made of plastic which is a Potential durability problem, painted cast iron in direct contact with workpiece can mark workpiece.

Suggestions: For the price, it's fine. Just don't be a hamfisted clod using this stuff. Epoxy a protective pad out of leather or something similar to the surface that meets the workpiece to keep from denting, scratching, or transferring paint to it.

After my initial review, I have had a couple of months to work with these pieces. The bench dogs are simply amazing. They do exactly what they are supposed to do. I did not expect the cheapo plastic to hold up under any sort of use, but they do. The holdfasts, which is what I bought this set for in the first place, are a bit of a disappointment though. This set came with 2, and I finally needed to use both of them yesterday, so the one that had not gotten used yet got slid into the dog hole, and a light tap with a rubber mallet and the one piece became two. Not good... However a quick call to Rockler Customer Service, and my replacement is on the way.

I bought this primarily for the hold down clamps. The dogs and the pad are nice to have so buying the package seemed smarter than just buying the hold down clamps.
One of the hold down clamps broke the first time I hit it with a hammer. I did not hit it that hard.
I assume (not sure) that Rockler would replace it if I pursued the issue - - but I don't want to deal with the hassle.

Editor's note:
No hassle to replace the broken hold down. Just call our customer support at 800-279-4441 with order info and a replacement can be sent right out.

The plastic dog pieces work well. The work surface pad is fine. The cast metal dog irons were low quality. I suspect made (overseas), and the paint immediately started to flake off. I give it a fair rating for the price as I caught the set on sale, otherwise, I would order the plastic dog pieces seperately.

First my bench is 3" thick 42 x 96 butcher block. we hefted this up on the cnc, cut a mess of 3/4" holes. We tried the blue hold down dogs first... didn't do squat, went through the 3/4" holes but would not jam or tighten up at all. The little black fences are fine although there plastic. so now we made up a bunch of 1/2" thick eccentrics with a 3/4" hole for a 3" length of 3/4" dowel then we rotate to kind of trap parts between them on the table.

Excellent product for the price. The dogs feel flimsy but work well. Metal machined in the same shape would be better, but significantly more money. The hole for the old downs needs to be a tight 3/4 inch diameter. Drill a practice hole first. If it is too loose, try an 11/16 spade bit. Better yet, start the hole with a 3/4 Forstner and then finish with a 3/4 spade. (My work bench is about 3" thick). The hold down does leave paint behind, but I just use a piece of plastic under the head if it matters. (Paint is easier to deal with than rust.)

I bought the package because I needed the holdfasts. No matter what I tried, I could not make the slick, painted, cast metal stems hold in the bench holes-to the point that they were dangerous. Last night the arm on one of them broke off when I hit it not hard. I just threw them in the garbage, as I would not even be interested in a replacement. I'm disappointed [in] such a clearly inferior product.

First, I give Rockler 5 stars for customer service. The bench dogs are great. I bought the kit for the holdfasts. Of the two holdfasts one would not fit through the 3/4" holes in my benchtop. I called Rockler and they sent a replacement immediatly. The replacement is also out of round and will not fit a 3/4" hole. They gave me a credit for the entire kit. Rockler has always prvided me excellent customer service

The router mat is is a good size and works well with my new Bosch Router. I drilled 1 test hole in my workbench for the Holddowns and bench dogs. The holddowns and bench dogs both work well. I believe that reviewers stating that a holddown broke had a defective item as ferrous metal can have undetectable interior flaws. The plastic bench dogs are sturdy, but anything can wear. However, replacements are inexpensive. Overall, I am delighted with this set.

I'm a Rockler guy, always have been. After watching a Fine Woodworking demonstration on hold down's I went to Rockler and found this set on sale. It arrived quickly and I went to work. I use the hold downs for everything, EVERYTHING, they are the best tool in my shop. So you can imagine how disappointed I was when I, in the middle of a huge build, whacked my hold down as I had a hundred times before, and broke the hook clean at the shoulder where the bar meets the hook. I thought, 'Really!? a rubber mallet snapped cast iron? That doesn't sound right.' Of course Rockler did it's thing and new ones are on the way. For the price, I guess you should expect this type of frequency of failure, but still, even given the lower quality, I do not know what I would do without these things in my shop. Just to be sure I never go a day without them again I ordered a second set.

I received the pack in the mail for my future workbench which I haven't started. I lost my old one to Katrina (flooded). Anyway they are solid quality accessories. Thanks.
